So I shagged my clutch

Otherwise, there's been no slippage when gears are engaged.

Any specific tests that i can do?

Slippage is not normal unless you are slow to release the clutch pedal.

To test the clutch, get up to around 30km/h, press in the clutch pedal, rev it to 5 or 6 K and hold it there, then dump the clutch.
If the engine starts to bog down, or slows down appreciably, then your clutch is fine, but if the revs soar or stay the same after you dump the clutch, then you have a slipping clutch.
If the clutch is going, you may not always be able to tell from the way the car revs while in gear, but you should be able to smell a slipping clutch.

So I shagged my clutch

Ive been looking latly for a clutch for my recently turbo '90. ive been talking with lots of companies here are some replied ive gotten
"
from exedy
The MZK-6944SO is rated for approximately 118hp and 124ftlbs at the wheels. - sports organic from there racing line
The MZK-6944SC 1s rated for approximatelu 143hp and 150ftlbs at the wheels. - sports ceramic from racing line

Our prior expererience with turbocharged versions of your engine is that they tend to over power the clutch at relatively low revs due to the massive increase in torque. Unfortunately we have nothing available to suit your application.
"
Any turbo car running more than 4-5 psi is putting down more power than both of those clutches so there not going to be good enough.

eXtreme clutch suggested the following

Xtreme Heavy Duty Organic Clutch Kit
at a guestimated 160ftpounds of torque

again not enough for any moderatly turbocharged car. Granted these were options for my 1.6, the 1.8 would hold a little more due to the bigger surface area ( at the expense of about a 30% price increase ).

An i interperating this wrongly? i want somthing for a DD that will be used in autox and hill climb but the offerings are very slim. the only real option if the FM options. i think i could get away with the extreme clutch option, BUT why get a clutch with wont scale with the engine. the general concensus os that the stock block is good untill 230-250TQ so why would one buya clutch that couldnt handle all that the stock block can.

Im new to cars and all this but trying to learn, im hoping im missing something that means all the above options would be ok or even missing a company out? ACT stage 1 is aparantly good but i cant find anything on it, even where to buy it.

Thanks guys, i'll test out the clutch tonight.

P.S. I did NOT know that changing the clutch can be such an expensive exercise.

possibly, but when i asked for a qoute and recomendation i outlined my plans for 250hp/300TQ ( to be sure it will hold ) and they recomended the on i listed above. i was a little annoyed that i needed to ask more questions to get the answer of a guestiamge of holding power, that was only a little above half of what i was asking for.

I've been usng the OEM SE clutch in my SP, and it seems to hold my 180+ RWKW very well.
Never had any slippage in 20,000k's, and it's smooth as silk with same pedal weight as the original.

well... i tested it out like Benny described in his post.

Get to 30kms, rev to 6000rpm and then let go. The car shook a bit and the rev dropped immediately and there was little change in speed.

I tried it out in 2nd 3rd and 4th gears and the result was the same.

Does this mean it's fine?.... :?:

It's fine. You would normally only change the clutch at well over 100K. It's expensive because of the labour involved (clutch is located between the engine and gearbox).

Couple of options to set your mind at ease:
Contact another forum member in your area and see what they think.
Go on a MX5 club run and pick their brains
Take it to one of the forum sponsors and ask for their opinion.

There is a Breakfast Run to MX5 Mania on the 16th May 2010 Link HERE
Also an EOI for a dodgy day in Sydney HERE

Problems like this a nigh-on-imposable to diagnose over the net.

Sounds like your clutch is fine Badbong, but if you want a second opinion, you can always bring it around to my place and I'll check it out for you.

Thought I'd ask here instead of making a new thread.

I'm looking at getting a Exedy Sports Tuff HD clutch to replace my existing Exedy Sports Tuff Button HD (which will be for sale upon removal) and wondering where would be the cheapest place to purchase one. Thanks in advanced. :D

SuperMazdaKart wrote:I have an Exedy Sports Tuff too, & while nothing wrong with it at all, I'd go for a heavy duty organic clutch from Xtreme Clutches. Just as good if not better plus a bit cheaper. Someones gotta support Aussie made, keep someone employed..

That's what I have in mine and I can't fault it. 1.6 Xtreme clutch, paired with an 1.6 Fidanza flywheel on a 1.8 = awesome fun.

Here is the thread.

Give it a go yourself. I did my first car clutch (done motorcycle previously) when I fitted the 6 speed. You'll appreciate why the labour cost is so high. :)
