Simons white 89 NA

Postby Smithy » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:15 pm

Hi there, thought I should add a garage thread of my own...

White Na6, factory hard top, air con, "fog" lights, no bracing, dvd player and fold out screen, Wheels magazine 1989 car of the year sticker, etc.

After visting my brother for a third time to watch Targa Tasmania and making use of his Fraser Clubman (and prior to that Evo IX) I decided I really wanted to get a cheap reliable weekend car... Eventually (wihtout much persuasion) decided an original mx5 would be awesome... I remembered reading articles about them when I was in school, especially how they eshaust was "tuned" to give the right exhaust notes etc.

Without much looking after a month or two and despite breaking a golden rule I purchased the first one I test drove, lol. Recent timing belt change, with certain seals and spark plugs replaced. Well looked after... 240K klms :) lol. Noisy gearbox at certain points when off throttle, but of no concern really...

First thing done was removed the dvd player and screen, and rear antenna. No stereo now, though yet to take speakers out, just keep forgetting :)
Noticed the hardtop wasn't even mounted on teh left side Frankenstain bolt... although still had to tighten and adjust hard top mounting brackets, now no more flexing roof, squeeks, or clunks.
cleaned out engine bay, removed hardwar from the non functional alarm (heavy sucker too), and tidied up the attached wiring until I figure out what the wires are attached to. Don't won't to remove and find car no longer starts :)
I got a off side plate bracket from the UK, and ditched the horrid plate cover. I've replaced the mirror with "CF" (imitation) "racing style" mirrors (which I've noticed are certainly heavier than the stock ones, lol.
I've fotted the TightA$rse rear subfrmae brace... great thing, easy enough to fit too. though now I notice the looseness in the front end chassis which I hope top fix up sometime soon.
This last weekend I fitted the ARC Magic Intake chamber... awesome thing. So lite. and actually makes noticeable diffarence to the mid range power delivery,,, I can change gear mid revs wthout a dip in accelaration which I got prior only if shifting above 5000...

mods planned soon... the A/C packed it in after 3 weeks of ownership so hope to remove soon as have made do through Brisbane summer wihout it so far :)
make up a shroud for space between radiator and top of front bumper...
Need to stiffen the front end somewhat.
Remove speakers form doors. Fill in the now two din spaces from steroe with aluminium plate so far, unitl guages replaced or something....

Trimmed some aluminium to fit front radiator gap and fitted over weekend. Covers the problem areas, large gap about bonnet latch, and the hole above AC thingy with the view hole thingy. Thing. Noticed sides also have large gaps i could probably out a fist through... thinks rubber about pop up lights might be a good iead to fit the side holes... bolt on cover probably better, will investigate further another day.

Also removed the useless sun visors and redundent Kenwood 140W speakers form doors.

Checked oil. Still nice and clear :P

Still contemplating removing AC altogther (out of gas , I assume).

Trial removed centreconsole. Will probably find another suitable to hack... I find the glovebox thing and ashtray on it just get in the way... probably will just cut the trim that surround the gear boot to fit for tidyness and to keep gear stick boot, find excess black carpeting to drape over trans tunnel to cover holes where current screws leave huge holes... would move window switches to blank aluminium sheet where DVD/screen once live in.

That car could could have a really early VIN number. Might be a significant car?

Significant in that it is the first year of production. Depending on the VIN it could be one of the first MX-5's in the country.
