A couple more areas to check:

Miata.net wrote:A third leak area has been cropping up lately with older Miatas. People have reported wetness in the trunk which can be caused by one of several factors: Dried out weather-stripping around the trunk, a cracked rain rail on the convertible top, or dried out weather-stripping around the tail lights. The tail light weather-strip problem has been appearing more and more frequently on the older vehicles.

I park on a flat surface. I'll have a look at miata.net too. Thanks for the advice.

I removed the roof to clean out the drainage pipes recently (with a couple of chopsticks :D ) and realised why there was water in the boot. I have no rain rail!

So I removed the parcel shelf carpet, unbolted the 3 heavy metal bars, then that was it! Behind it was the roof itself, then following that the body work of the car. Somehow sometime during a past owner's life, he/she probably found the cracked OEM rain rail and probably just threw it away.

I'm now contemplating between getting the unbreakable Duetto rain rail or just a completely new roof, since my old roof is pretty, um, old. This listing has particularly attracted my attention: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330465253347&_trksid=p2759.l1259

That is just too funny! Sorry, I feel your pain but I'm still pissing myself laughing! :D

And full marks for taking the initiative to search for rainrail replacement options. 8)

Laugh no more, Guran! I've just ordered a Duetto INVINCIBLE rain rail! My car's going to be drier than a 90 year old nun.

Great stuff! 8) Please post a report on how it goes with the installation and whether it solves your leaks. If you don't mind saying, what did you pay for it, including postage?

I haven't confirmed my order, but the email says it's $84.95 S&H. Making it a total of US$254.90. That's around AU$282

So now my dilemma is whether to just order a new top, or get a rain rail first and just make do for a while.

the mark up on these things must be about 100 times- just crazy. I would be looking for a used one - try the forum- or maybe an old one can be renovated?? It might even make sense to look for a complete secondhand top which is not out of place on a secondhand car.

Yeah Close to AU$300 for some polyeurothane stripping is pretty steep. I think I might as well get a Robbin vinyl cloth with the glass window that comes with a rain rail, then sell off my old one. I get 'more' for my money. I've been wanting to get a glass window anyway.
