connect ipod to sterio nb8b

I want to connect my ipod to my standard doubldin sterio.
is there a way to do this? a connector or something? its an 01 mx5

Hi Mate,

I am also looking to integrate my ipod into my double din sound system, and from what I have found this is probably the best solution.

I know you have both said Ipod so I will assume that is what you have. If it is an iPhone (or maybe even an iPod touch) then be sure to check the charging voltage as these 2 are differ from the normal iPod. When I bought my Alpine head unit I found that Pioneer etc would play iphone but not charge. My sister bought a brand new suzuki swift with an ipod jack in the glovebox. Wont even recognise her phone.

just be sure to check before you freight something halfway across the globe

I actually am contemplating getting a new head unit for my soon to be new i phone. I have a feeling its going to be better to replace the head unit with a double din which allows me to use my i phone then using the stock system with an i pod kit. What do you think?

If you are contemplating changing the head unit you might like to consider the Fusion brand ipod unit. It looks like a normal in dash unit but you insert your ipod into a plastic carrier which then slides into the player. The in dash unit then has all the functionality of the ipod.
I put the Fusion unit in my NB8B and am very happy with the performance of the unit. The only drawback with it is that it does not have a CD slot. It has AM/FM radio and looks OK installed in the car. At about $300 plus installation it is a reasonable purchase.

At the end of the day I bought a new head unit, a Clarion CX609A.

All in all Ive been very happy with it. It has USB, Ipod integration, as well as Bluetooth hands free.

The best bit is that you can change the colour of the display to match the colour of the instrument lighting, making it look very OEM.

I got mine for about $400 installed if I remember correctly.

Motorola make a hands free kit which fits perfectly into coin slot on the right side of the steering wheel.(its useless for coins so at least its good for something)
It has the bonus of being able to connect a Ipod or Ipone via a wire to the glove box or where ever, and it charges as well.
The Hands free kit is fantastic stops the music when the phone rings and you can hear fine even with the roof down.
Parrot also make a similar unit with a separate display.
The carkit company come out and fit them for about $450. No holes and easily removed if needed.
I am really happy with the Motorola unit.

About to bite the bullet and buy this kit from Grom audio http://www.gromaudio.com/store/ipod_ada ... rface.html. Since the Aussie dollar is holding up so well I thought now is the time. What do you guys think?

I wanted to keep my SP looking original as possible so I opted for a hidden connector that plugs into the back of the original stereo and ends in the glove box. I bought an "Audio Link ipod Intergration System for Mazda (602-300)" from RSpeed in the US in July 2008. It was expensive then (around $130 delivered), but it's served the purpose. Only two drawbacks with this solution (1) it doesn't charge, but it does work with iPod, mini-ipod, and iPhone (2) Limited to crappy sound from OEM stereo.

Yeah this is a similar system to the one your talking about mx5-sp, I'm surprised that it does not charge the i pod though. However in my case, I don't want to put a after market system in, because I think it will most likely attract the wrong type of attention.

I just received and installed the i pod kit for the factory head unit on a NB8B. It is made by Grom Audio in the USA, and due to the US dollar being so close to the Australian, I thought it was about time to get the kit. The kit comprises: A little black box with the circuitry, an i Pod cable which connects to the black box, and a cable to connect the head unit to the black box. Its a pretty straight forward installation, and in my car there was a bit of space near head unit to stick the box. The I pod cable is long enough to reach the center console which is what I hoped for. The quality is as good as a Cd, and you do not have turn up the volume to hear the music. All up it ended up costing me US113, which equated to $121 including the Google surcharge. I would recommend it if you want to keep the "stock" look of your head unit but with I pod functionality. I have only tested it on my Iphone 4, however will test on a few more i pods later on this week.
