CHOOK'S NA MX5

Postby Chook » Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:30 pm

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself. The names 'Chook!'.

Been in the Honda scene for awhile now, swapped the EG Civic for a NA MX5!

Finally got the time to post up a thread for my MX5 build.

So my beloved EG is gone...

Bye bye :(

and this is what has taken it's place.

It's a 1990 NA6 MX5, classic red in colour.

Following mods were included when I purchased the car;

- Garage Vary front lip
- MX5 mania intake
- Koni yellow height and damper adjustable shocks with king springs
- nardi steering wheel
- blox gear knob

Car came with a sparco sprint V fixed bucket seat, which I sold and put the standard seat back in, sprint hart cp's are on loan from a friend till I save up for some new rims.

Still a long way till it's up to my standards but with some time I'm sure it wont disappoint.

I'll try to regularly update this thread, but that will be determined by my bank account.

Keep you guys posted.

Thanks for viewing.

Thanks guys! Its good to be on board!

I think I'll have this car for awhile.. When you enjoy something (in this case its modifying cars), some times money shouldn't be a problem. I just take my time, good things come to those who wait.

I'm pretty sure alot of classic red MX5's all look pretty similar at the start LOL.

Welcome to the obsession (gotta admit I love the civic too and wanted one as a first car for my son)
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thanks mate. Obesession indeed.

Yeah, I never liked Honda's to tell you the truth. Hung around with a group of friends who owned all different type of Honda's with all different type of engine conversions and was amazed with their potential.

In my opinion just like the NA MX5, the EG Civic is one of those shapes that will be a timeless classic compared to its predecessors.

As you guys can see I'm heavily influenced by the US scene. I know its not everyones cup of tea but I'll make sure its tastefully done.

I want to build a nice street car that I can also set up for a track day, motorkhana etc. while aesthetically pleasing. To sum it up in three words 'The total package'.

Yeah I loved my EG civic. The attention that I would get from all sorts of people with the occasional thumbs up!

My Civic was top of the range in that year model with sunroof, full electrics, A/C, and a single cam VTEC motor. It had a full respray, koni yellow height and damper adjustable shocks, sport max 501's with stretched 195/45's, EG6 front lip, spoon style mirrors, amber corners, buddy club fixed bucket seat, momo wheel, and a type R gear knob.

I had alot of plans for my EG. I bought a B16A engine which is a 1.6 DOHC VTEC motor from such cars as EG6 SIR Civic's (JDM) and EM1 VTiR Civic coupe's (AUDM). The package came with a gear box, engine mount, and drive shafts.

Long story cut short. I picked up the motor and stored it at the mechanic garage that I used to work at at the time. I had a huge falling out with the boss and left my motor and gear box there. It was awhile till I decided to go back and pick up my stuff, by the time I decided he had close shop and my motor and gear box was gone.

I couldnt bring myself to buy another B16A package. WIth the money of two B16A's i could have bought a B18CR (DC2 Intergra Type R) package. So I decided to cut my losses and get rid of the car to someone who can afford to finish it off.

I'm pretty sure I'll buy another EG and finish off that dream. But at the moment I'm loving the new toy!

Sounds like you've got some nice plans for the MX5. Certainly the way I like to see cars modified. I reckon the MX5 wouldnt be a bad motorkhana car. Interesting to see how you go with that.

Such a shame you didnt get the B16 in there. Would of been abit of a weapon. Plus the sound of a nicely modded VTEC engine coming on VTEC is a bloody awesome sound. I think EG's are cool as daily hacks. Especially when theres a K20A stuffed in there and all the weight stripped out of the things :P.

Looking foward to watching your cars progress!

It's been awhile since I've posted up any new mods in my build thread. I told myself the next mod was a hard top roof before I decide to purchase anything else.

So I finally found one thanks to a fellow forum member. Not the colour I was hoping for but beggars can't be choosers.

I was tossing up between painting it black or red for the mean time until I do my full respray. I don't like the look of a black roof and if I painted it red I knew it wasn't going to match the car, but after two days I couldn't take it anymore so I decided to put it in for a red respray. I know it will be a waste but what can you do.

Here are some photo's of the white roof. Sorry about the crappy camera phone pics. I'll take better photos when its painted red.

Next mod is a BROWN DAVIS roll bar.

I would of left it red if you were going to respray it later. I dig the whole white/red thing too, but thats just me.

Looks like the 13B Miata in the states ;)

Your car is coming along nicely too, keen to see what else you have installed :D

Sorry did you mean I should have left it white?

Haha yeah you're the second person who's mentioned that my car looks like that Miata..

Think I spotted this behind me in traffic this morning, the white top caught my eye. I reckon keep it white until you're ready for a full respray.
