Copying Keys

Postby Divo » Wed Jul 14, 2010 7:46 pm

Hi all

I know Mazda will create a spare key for a price. Is there any non Mazda option to having a spare key with correct chip created ? I need one for an 2002 NB in Brisbane.

cheers

Yes ........ I had a spare key made up in a shopping centre - Mister Minute or something similar. I have an NB8A so don't know if yours is different, they placed my key in the reader then cut a blank and programmed it.
Cost around $60 from memory.

The chip in our keys are just an RFID chip, and with addition of a reader/writer, any PC can re-program it.

The trick is to program it with the right code.........................................

Key saga update.

This info might be of use to others:

Had the key electronically "checked" to establish the chip type in the key. The 02 MX5 has the chip type which requires the ECU to be used in the creation of a new key. No problem except the price is $220 per key. I wonder how much Mazda charge?
Apparently earlier models are simpler to cut because the chips are not as "smart" and are copied in house - $140.

Isn't technology wonderful!!??

on our eariler NB I bought the key and got it cut elsewhere then took it to Mazda to program (I remember that was cheaper than having mazda do the entire job).
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
