Cup holders in 1993 LE..

Postby Noddycar » Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:24 pm

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone has solved the issue of adding cup holders into this model? Replacing the ashtray with an insert does not seem feasible, as it is so close to the gearshift.... I guess my early morning coffee is no more! Thanks.

Hi there,
Do a search for DIY cupholder or something along those lines. I remember someone making a good cupholder on the rear console assembly lid which covers the fuel lid opener lever. This is a good place in my opinion as it is away from the gear shift and between each seat's recliner.
Good luck!

Thanks Les....

I haven't found anything yet, but will keep looking. The last thing I want to do is drill any holes into my new toy. I am trying to keep it as original as possible. I am sure it would not be too hard to "bodge" up a temporary holder in the console.

Regards

Thanks... Looks like most people have gone for the drink holders that replace the ashtray. As my shift lever is only about two inches long and sits directly in front of that component, it may be a little tight. I will head down to the marine shop, as I vaguely recall they had some suction cup style cup holders in stock. If they will fit in the rear console, all is solved!

Thanks Dmacc....

Such a simple solution! I had exactly the same folding cup holders in my old boat and I know that I can grab them from numerous places. Easy!

Hi Dmacc

The folding style in the link you emailed is available at most marine shops... Not sure if I can get it in a matching tan (!)..... Of course, I could just order one from Ebay, but then I would not have an excuse to go shopping in the marine store :)

Thank you sooooooooooooooo much for this. You know how long it has pissed me off not having a cup holder? The only ones I could find where the center console ashtray style. And (a) I think those would be annoying trying to shift gears with and (b) definately not paying $60 and THEN shipping on top just to hold a drink!!

No more driving with coffee between thighs, cheers mate! just bought that ebay one lol.

I actually purchased a folding cup holder from Kmart (in their fishing section, with the boat gear). They have two types - it is the smaller version. I cut a notch in the base, so it fits perfectly into the console. Also, I put a little silicone around the notch, to ensure any spills are contained in the holder. It folds down into the console perfectly. Rather than screw or glue it it, I got some strong velcro tape and used that to hold it in place. Perfect!
Shame you can't fit two in there, but I figure the passenger doesn't need to hold a steering wheel and change gears, so this works fine for me.

Remote central locking! What a luxury.... It feels strange to be opening a car with a key again (have only had Noddy for a few weeks now). The cup holder was my only gripe.

There's also this sort of solution, i'm sure i've seen single din ones before ..

I just jam the drink between the centre console and the seat, might not work if you have short legs.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I thought of that too, but the prices were too high for my liking and it seemed hard to DIY.

Yeah remote central locking is so great! :) I am lucky that I got it in early its been raining cats and dogs down in sydney!
Its quite easy to install the kit from jaycar if you ever want to do it and there are great manuals for mx5 installations if you google it.

Good luck with touching up Noddy ;)
