Opinions... Pedders Coilovers.

Postby dave2221 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:47 pm

Search engine didnt bring up anything new... so i am asking a fresh question.

Has anyone got the Pedders Coilovers, and if so what do they think?

Product code is 160066

Retail is $1600

They have 30 dampening settings,
they are height adjustable

and prob some other things i just didnt remember from my phone call.

anywho, i figured they would be better build quality than the BC items i have seen around, and cheaper than the Teins...... so whats your 2c?

Tein SS, but for feedback on Pedders Range Runner got some late last year (i.e. Pedders XA Sports pack, with ride height adjustable shocks & beefed up sway bars):

When I was doing my research I called my local Pedders agent direct. He was very helpful. Even went out of his way to find out info he didnt have and call me back (like spring rates. 8F and 6R just like most coilovers)

I simply couldnt see the $$$ value in spending more on Pedders over BC or similar for my road car and ended up buying Yellow Speed's. Check Mania for details on them as they stock them (or will soon)
cheers

$1600 sounds like a rip off.

From memory Pedders rebrand Monroe shocks. But I'm not sure if that extends to this particular product.

You can definitely get Teins for $1600. Take a look at BC, too.

I might be able to get these at cost price.

So this would make them (i imagine) around the $1,000 mark. or at least the same cost as the BC ones.

Would that change your view on them?

I had these fitted on my Clubman about 2 months ago. They are called Pedders Sportsryder Extreme Xa (160066). The Clubman is my first MX5 and I havn't dríven any others so I cant say if the Pedders are good or bad compared to other coilovers. I wanted coilovers so the car would be lower and more comfortable to drive. I didn't want to go down the King spring route. I trusted the guy who fitted and recommended them and so I didn't research them before i gave him the go ahead. All i know is that the car is alot more comfortable to drive now compared to the original Bilstein setup. I dont use my car on the track so i wasn't concerned about race handling. All in all i'm very happy with the ride quality and that it's now lowered.

AK thanks

that was the kind of response i was after.

this is a daily for me.... and the reason i am gong to coilover route, is height adjustability.

i want to be able to drop it like its hot to the legal limit (100mm) and then just adjust it from there (depending on how user friendly its going to be on sydney streets)

i couldnt think of anything worse than spending a few hunderd dollars on lowered springs and discovering its too low and ahve to change!

and yes the product code for the coilovers i was looking at is 160066.... so obviously the same.

Getting a quote next week on cost price....

Hi dave2221,

I'm not sure if the Pedders will go as low as you want. You need to obvioulsy check that when you phone for quotes. I didn't want to go too low. I'm running stock 14 inch rims with 185x60 bridgestones, and the height measured from the bottom of the rim to the guards is 20 inches all round.

Pedders guy said they would go "low enough for show"

implying that i could go stupid low to display car...

i would obviously check it before buying, but i dont want to go stupid low..... as its a daily driver.

$1600 is not worth it, when you can get BC's for like ~$1200.

To the OP,
I still do not understand spending anywhere over $1k locally and not at least consideri the Koni/Eibach combination. Why do you need threaded adjustable platforms when you are probably going to leave it and never change it again? There is a lot of positives to be said about the damping capability of Koni Sport adjustables shocks. Machining grooves on the body of the shock can be done if the springs are not low enough for you. Maybe even consider the Kings for this purpose?

Have you actually sat in different set ups or are you just going to base it on Internet research? I recommend contacting your local MX5 Club and getting an actual ride in different set ups before making your decision. Everyone has an opinion (subjectively) and only a few have actually tried several set ups.

I hope you get what you want out of this endeavour.

I would like the height adjustment for a few reasons.

1. I have a quite steep driveway, and if i purchased low springs i may be stuck and not be able to get home.
2. i want the car to be as low as possible without losing all the practicality of a daily. if its too low then i have to go through the process of getting all new springs, or if its not low enough vice versa.

so for the little extra money it means i dont have to swap springs everytime i want to change the height of the car...... which may only be once, or it may be never.

I wont be spending more than $1200 on a full suspension setup, and i am hoping that i can get the pedders coilovers for less than this price. also the pedders offer an adjustable dampener, which offers more flexibility.

I just have heard that the pedders are a better quality coilover than the BC ones, and if people had any problems with them

To the OP:
Firstly, which MX5 do you own?
Secondly, based on the answer to the first questions, NA Koni shocks have 3 spring perches which should give you enough range to get up your driveway depending on the springs. Granted, having a threaded body will allow for easy adjustment.
Thirdly, Koni shocks are damper adjustable and in my opinion are one of the best you can buy.

However, if $1200 is all you have to spend right now, the BC set up sounds like an option or perhaps you could actually save up some more money to buy more reputable and widely used set up?

Anyway, that is it from me. Good luck with whatever you decide.

You want to slam it, but you have a steep driveway.......

Just get some Kings, they're not stupidly low, they're a piece of piss to fit and they're reasonably cheap

Image

Thats how Kings sit

Image

Thats with coilovers wound down to very low (but it doesn't look that low going by the tyre-arch gaps) but you get massive rear negative camber, its verrrrrry obviously lowered from behind (ie where mr policeman will be looking at it from). I had it raised so it would be just over the legal limit and its really not much lower than the Kings were, unless you really really slam them they just don't look that low because all the stuff under the car hangs down so far that it has to almost be scraping on the ground before the sills start to look low and the tyres get up in the guards.

Also, as soon as you lower them you're stuffed if you have a front chin spoiler, they are far enough forward and hand down enogh that they smack on spoon drains, turning onto heavily cambered roads etc
