NA6 high rpm squeal

Postby kazman » Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:13 pm

Hey guys,

I've got a 1993 NA6, which makes an unnerving noise that causes me shift too early to really enjoy it. Above about 5000rpm, the motor (i assume, as it sounds like it's coming from there) makes an odd high-pitched squeal noise, and it sounds to me like it's metal-on-metal (but i could be completely wrong). This noise stays to 7000+ rpm, but doesn't occur at all below about 5000rpm. I have no idea what could be causing this, but i'd really like to get it sorted out soon as it's making my MX-5 far less enjoyable than it should be.

Any opinions on what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Kieren

could it be the alternator or power steering/ air conditioning belt slipping?

Agree...definitely sounds like it is the A/C, P/S or alternator belt slipping.

When were the timing belt and accessory belts replaced?

Do not be tempted to tighten the tensioners to get rid of the noise!! All you will do is place to much load on the bearings in the alternator, power steering and AC compressor and before you know it they will be singing like a kettle!

Have you tried popping the bonnet and having a good listen while you gradually increase revs by twisting the throttle lever? Should help to pinpoint the source.
