from what i know....
with an engineers cert yes.

basic rules for rims.... 1 inch higher diameter and 1 inch wider..... will get you away full legal....

anything else you need a engineer to sign off on it.

Back to the original NA6/NA8 debate ... it's mainly personal preference if you're not going to be too serious about laptimes on the track. I'd say take your time and just drive a shedload of each and see what you feel most comfortable with (and don't forget to try an NB8A or two along the way as well).

BTW 15x8 is getting too big for an NA6 (and probably even a stock NA8).

no they are not illegal in qld.

that is incorrect.

in qld you are allow to do whatever you want with a rim. but the tyre's rolling diameter can not increase by more than 15mm and the width cannot increase by more than 33% of the original fitted.

in nsw it is 2 inch larger diamet and 25mm width increase.
in vic is is like qld with the 15mm rolling diameter, but only 25mm width allowable increase.
(added other state's rules for forum readers)

so for a qld resident, a 225/45R 15 = 584mm (15x8) is legal, as an original na8, 185/60R14 = 578mm (14x5.5)

but 225/45R15 = $300+ each, and normally only come in crazy soft compound semi slick style tyres. and overkill as stated above. i'd be looking at 15x7 +15 rims fitted with 205/50R15 tyres. lots of good options available like the Kumho KU36 and will fit without guard rolling and save you 40%...

on topic:-
if just looking for a daily drive for around $10K, there are much better options out there in that price range. but picking between a NA6 and NA8 is just preference. it's whether or not you wanna pay $2k extra for the few bonuses as posted above. or whether you can do without some of them, 1 being useless to you if you don't wanna track it.

The Na8 is a better car due to the diff and some bracing but theres nothing wrong with the b6 engine. I have a very simple B6 that is WAY faster than a stock Na8 and the revs and the power band of the engine makes it so much more fun to drive IMO.

cheers. the nsw rta have made a few changes in the past year. they seem to be following vic's style of rules. i wonder when nsw ammended their rules?

interesting to see that an MX5 can go to 1.5"/39mm wider rim with a engineers cert. since it is between 801-1200kg unlaiden mass.

i remember the uproar about requiring engineers certs last year sometime.

that 1 inch bigger & 1 inch wider rule mentioneds earlier was changed somewhere around 2001 or so. I don't recall exactly which ADR rule it used to be. But it was superseded some time ago.
the current one I linked is from 2003.

allow me re-phrase that.

ADR24 used to refer to Tyre & rim selection. Its probably what was drilled into every engineers head. And ADR24 probably said something about the 1inch upsizing or something. I don't know.

in 2003 ADR24 ceased to have effect as it was incoperated into ADR 42.

which is general safety requirements, the document I linked in the previous post

for anyone who is interested
