1.6 or 1.8 which is preferred?

Postby dave2221 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 3:55 pm

Had a look through 3 pages of this area.....cant find the info i want...

if this question has been answered... just tell me where to search or which keywords to use :)

basically in a NA.... which is the preferred motor?

i know the 1.6L has less power. but that doesnt necisseraly make it the worst engine

in my toyota days, the 1.6 4age is a much more desired engine to the newer 1.8L engines in the new corolla's

so.... which would you have and why?

1.6L or 1.8L NA?

1.8 no doubt... more torque.

but some people prefer the reviness of the 1.6

Funny you should mention the 1.6 Corolla. I had a SX hatchback with the 100Kw 4AGE engine before I bought my first MX-5. I loved the 4AGE engine, just kept on revving. While the NA6 engine doesn't have the same upper rev limit as the 4AGE I still think it is a fun engine for the MX-5.

With a decent Cold Air Intake and free flowing exhaust the NA6 comes very close to match the power of the NA8.

That's a real COW. Answer depends on what you plan to use the car for. The following threads provide some good info that might help your decision.

Which MX5 is best for me?
NA6 VS NA8................. worth the extra??
Everyone's selling their MX5's right now?

I wish I had of got an NA8 to begin with, rather than spending money upgrading parts on mine to NA8 spec.

Guran has basically hit the nail on the head though.

If i were to do it again, id get a 1.8 ( for the diff / brakes ) and when the clutch went put a lightened 1.6l clutch and flywheel to get some of the free reving back.

i think ill end up with a 1.6

there are just more of them out there with the other requirements that i have.... (hard top, body mods, suspension) and price being one of them as i am purchasing an apartment and am looking for a cheap and cheerful downgrade from my BMW.

but what you have basically outlined is that the 1.6 lacks that little bit of power, but is in no way an inferior engine.

i am not looking for a race car.... otherwise i just wouldnt get a MX5 period..... for the money you can go MUCH faster....

only planning 1 thing for any mx5 i get... what i call the golden rule for making sure my MX5 is no "hairdressers car"

THE RULE:
LOWER
WIDER
LOUDER

Simple formula on a NA....

15x8 0 offset wheels
height Adjustable suspension (to make sure i can get the exact lowness i need for legal and speed hump purposes)
garage vary lip
exhaust

Apart from the engine, there are other reasons that the 1.8 is prefferable to the 1.6.

The NA8A's got more chassis stiffening as well as a stronger diff and the brace between the seat belt towers, and they also got power mirrors and a retractable radio antenna.

Personally if I had the choice, I'd go for the 8A every time over a 6A

NA8C vs NA6C?

Anyway yes, you asked only about the engines... if you're looking at NAs there are a lot of differences, which are probably outlined in that other thread above.

Best thing would be to set a budget and buy the best NA within that budget. Hopefully it's a NA8.

my budget is $10,000

this includes a MX5, rims/tyres and coilovers.

i reckon suspension is approx $1,200
Rims $1,000
Tyres $1,000

this leaves me with $7,000 for a MX5.... not alot.

also would like one with a Hard top.....

so far i have found one, and i am just waiting to sell the BMW to buy it.....

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=8706974&ref=RecentItem&__N=1216+1246+1247+1252+1282&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&Ns=

i have test dríven this car, and although the respray is a little on the rough side, i can see some good value in it.

all NA8's just seem to be a few more g's and i am not sure that the extra money is going to be worth it for me, as it will never see a track so the extra power/chassis work is just not a huge benefit....

I can however see the benefit in the NA8.... but spending the extra money just doesnt seem relevant since i am downgrading to SAVE money.

:)

oh PS if someone would like to buy this..... i can go get my MX5!

tyres will prb be cheaper than $1000

but the rims will prob be more expensive (esp in a 15x8 +10 4x100PCD)

so all up it will work itself out

$2k for wheels and tyres isn't outrageous by any means. New knock offs or genuine used?
