Yellow Speed Racing coilovers

Postby Bauer » Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:23 pm

Hey guys

If anyone noticed my garage thread you will have seen that I have added coilovers. I thought I would drop a post in here on my thoughts now that they have been in for a week.

So who are Yellow Speed Racing? Well I had no idea who they were or what they were like but after a bit of research I was willing to take the plunge and give them a go. I first saw them on ebay which is a touch scary but I saw that the ebay seller was MX5mania. That made me feel more comfortable even though I had never dealt with them before. They get a good rap here and it is here I get my advice and opinions. My gut said they wouldnt be selling them to us if they thought they were crap and I read somewhere in my research that Yellow Speed made a decent product and were establishing themselves in the market. I noticed tonight that Mania will be adding Yellow Speed Racing coilovers to their stock list soon by the look of their front page. (and that is what reminded me to give the coilovers a bit of a review and a plug)

My disclaimer: I am only comparing these new coilovers to stock suspension and kings/stock so I am certainly not saying they are better than any other coilover. From what I had, a kilo of sausages on each corner would have provided a better rebound so I am extra pleased at the gains I have made. How these would go on the track I dont know but when I ordered them and talked to Ajay, he said they had another set they were fitting to one of their cars so I would certainly ask them what they think of them too.

For the cost (under $1k) they work out as cheap (or near enough) to a set of shocks, springs and bumpstops and as they arrive fully built, fitting was a breeze. No compressing springs n stuff. They were well packed and as you can see from the pic, I got a shirt too :D

Image

The build quality seems to be really good too. What I found (and I was told by Ajay prior to purchase) was that the rear dont have the outer tube for ride height, only the spring collar. I was a little unsure at first but when I actually fitted them, I found it sat lower than my lowered Kings at the standard height. You certainly wouldnt want to fit these if you were looking for standard height. The fronts were like any other coilover for the adjustment and only today I put it up on the jack to lower it a further 10mm at the front :D Took me about 20 minutes.

Here is a pic of the rear. I read somewhere about collars fouling on suspension arms or swaybars (cant remember what it was) but these dont hit on anything anywhere and dont even look close.

Image

All in all I am really happy with them. I dont know how they would compare to anything else. I imagine you wouldnt be considering these if you were looking at PSS9's :D but maybe if you are looking at BC's or similar then these are worth asking about.

Image

I felt like a bit of a guinea pig when I bought them as I had not seen or heard of any other MX-5 with them fitted, but I am glad I went with my gut.
cheers

Spring rates were the same as all the others that compare. 8 front and 6 rear

And yes you can adjust the shock stiffness. The instructions said for daily driving, set it at 8 (I think) so I did that and havent touched it since.

here is another picture :D

Tein Monoflex are 7/6 in Jap spec and those are stiff. If those are 8/6 they're very harsh for street shocks. How much adjustment do they have total?

From the Yellow Speed website:
This suspension system features 33-way dampening force adjustment (compression/ rebound). A wide range of dampening adjustments can be made to provide a variety of responses to different road conditions and to tune the ride feel.

So, how are they going?
I'm looking at replacing my original suspension and might consider these.
They're the right colour for a clubman.

no change from when I bought them so all is good. For the cost difference, I wouldnt even go to BC over these (but I havent used BC either)

I did put the jack under it and drop the front another 10mm though :NA8:

Did you end up adjusting the rear height at all or is that the factory settings in the pic? Have they dropped much as they settle in?
I have some of these waiting to go in, won't be able to do it for about 3 weeks though.

The rear's went in at maybe 5mm lower than the height out of the box and as I mentioned, I dropped the front quite a bit from what was shipped.

The whole lot has settled and dropped a fraction more. I must grab some more pics soon.

And the Premium Competition coilovers come with 12kg/11kg springs. They'll shake a few fillings loose.

It is hard to compare against much else as I dont have a lot to compare it to. These are certainly firm for a daily driver and I have the shocks set at the recommended setting for daily use. I havent changed that at all from the day I fitted them so I must get out and play with that too.

I would imagine they would ride like most similar coilovers with similar spring rates which is probably too harsh for true daily use but liveable. I dont know if that is unfair to say or not as I havent dríven anything else.

I am more than happy with what I got. If you want a coilover for the sake of having coilovers, I can recommend the Yellow Speeds.

I've just received a set of BC BR coilovers for my SE and the instructions are complete nonsense, it looks like they've just used an online translator and no-one (no English speaker) has actually verified if they make any sense. What were your instructions like?
