Questions about wheels

Postby Mr nanotech » Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:49 pm

Hey as much as I love the Wat's I have installed on the mx right now, since the car has been lowered (apprx 98ml from ground to car) the weak offset has become more and more noticable. Since the wheels are gloss black they don't really stick out so much so it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be and to be honest I'm more than happy with the car as it is.
But that said, it sounds like I'm contradicting the whole point of this first paragraph. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. However the wider wheels question pops back into my head a lot. Initial I thought Sportmax would work but after a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of research, they really aren't for me. They seem to stick way too far out the wheel arch and look odd without bolt on fenders.
I've been going through a lot of pics of classic JDM wheels off oldschool drift cars and so on and I like a lot of the Work Equip types, SSR Formula Mesh and Star Sharks, even the infamous Sakura wheels. So that should lay out where my taste lies. The Watanabe's I have on right now are the standard f8 14x6.5 with an offset of about +35 thereabouts. So you can guess they don't reach the tops of the guards.
I've looked into those sites where you can work out your offset and so on using a scroll down menu and type in the figures etc... but to be perfectly honest, I have no idea what I'm doing.
Shame to admit but I'm relatively naive with this sort of stuff as I've only been bitten by the car bug within the last 2 years. So I'm learning new things every day. And believe me I want to learn.

Now before I get too off topic, there should be enough up top to deduce where I'm going with this but I'll simplify it anyway (for myself more than anything).
I've been looking into those said JDM wheels and some are not as easy to find as I thought (and as you probably know). So I've looked into third party companies who make 'knockoffs'. I know, I know... You get what you pay for and imitation is never as good as the real thing. But factor in that I'm a broke student living at home and not as financially solid as some of you older guys!
I found the Axis OG's to be relatively decent looking and can't seem to find any faults (according to owners on forums). The prices seem to be pretty neat so I'm not complaining there, but I don't wanna jump in and pay for something that will bend, crack or simply weigh a ton.
I'm looking for something in 14" or 15" that is roughly 7.5" wide. I'm not sure on offset but I want dish :D I just want to get the edge of the rim to sit level with the top of the wheel arch without resorting to spacers or anything which will result in AAMI dropping me after an accident.

So sorry for the long winded novel, hopefully I've outlined what I'm after. I'm not trying to rely on other people to get this done for me, I'm just a been hazy with dimensions and manufacturers. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum (and so I've seen) have a lot of knowledge in this area and I'd be very appreciative to hear some of it!

******Edit******
Forgot to mention the car is a 1990 na6!! Not sure if there is a change in arch size between na and nb.

You'll be paying around the same amount for new knock-offs as secondhand good wheels. Save your money and just wait to find something decent secondhand

Josh wants hella flush fitting wheels for his na6. Not sure about offset, want extreme dish.
Any suggestions and pricing for JDM wheels like Equips, SSR Formula Mesh or similar JDM styles. Prices of knock offs vs the real thing. Ie: prices of Axis OG Oldschool wheels vs legit.

How is that?

Bah. Knock offs.

Refer to the thread about equips for my thoughts on fitment.

I think a 7 inch rim with a +17 offset should be about right

so this is exactly what I'm after http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/7148/dishhuu2mq7.jpg
Or this http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/ ... 20copy.jpg

Problem is that I have no idea where I can find a set. So far i can only find the Rota Zero clones of the 01 I think and the Axis OG rip of the 03.
So if anyone could point me in the direction of the legit ones and some rough pricing or if the axis remakes are any good.
Looking of both in silver and black, not gold.

I'm going to be on the lookout still, but if anyone has 2cents to add, go for it!

Forum Sponsor "MX-5 Shop" can do you a great deal on Axis wheels - see here and here for details.

PM Les (mx52nv) for more info.

edited to add: Also not all Axis wheels are remakes / clones - they also sell other manufacturers' wheels under license (eg the "Axis Circuit" wheels, which are a "rebadged" version of Rays Engineering's Gram Light wheels)

Thanks a lot, I just sent a pm to him. So I'll see what happens. Hopefully end up with some shiny new wheels!
