NC rear brakes on NB?

Postby geofiz » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:26 am

Does anybody know if NC rear brakes (ie rotors and calipers) are a "bolt on" fit for a NB. I am building up my NB for street / track work, and have already acquired a set of series 6 RX7 front calipers, rotors and stub axle, which I believe is bolt on.

This will give me front and rears with 5 x 114.3 stud pattern, and much improved braking.

I don't know for sure, You'd need the 5 stud hubs but i'm pretty sure the rear suspension on the NC is different to the NA/NBs so I don't think the hub would bolt up.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thanks for the info. I will hunt around for some pictures or specification for the NC rear suspension /hubs / brake set up and see how it compares to the NB setup.

Anyone have any other suggestions for upgrading the rear brakes and changing to 5 x 114.3 PCD at the same time?

NC uses an upper wishbone and lower multi-link suspension compared to the double wishbones on every other MX5 from memory.

I managed to track down the parts manuals for NB and NC modles, and you are right the rear suspension is totally different. I will have to keep thinking of another way to do it. Thanks anyway.

The stock NB8B brakes can handle a heap of abuse. Not to mention there are heaps of bolt on 4 stud kits. How crazy is the car your building that you HAVE to have bigger brakes all round?

I am trying to keep the balance between front and rear braking, plus you can never have too much braking (assuming you have good tires  )

It is still stock at the moment, but I want to get the brakes and suspension sorted and upgraded before starting on the drivetrain. I have done it the other way round too many times before, so I promised myself this time I would do it the right way.

How much power are you planning on making? I don't think there's any 2F race cars running larger brakes and those can be upto 130kw naturally aspirated cars. I could understand if your building a turbo car but most people find the standard brakes sufficient with good pads, rotors, fluid and lines.

Most of the 2B turbo (in the 190kw atw region) cars look like they just run AP racing front kits and stock rear ends too. Can you get to a track and check out any cars similar to what you want to build?

I am planning on building either a turbo or SC (leaning towards SC just because there aren't as many as turbo's). the MX5 club of WA is having a track day tommorow, so I will hopefully get a chance to wander down and have a bit of a look and a chat with a few people.
