Flywheel/ clutch options for my clubbie?

Hey All,

I'm a bit of a noob here so pardon me if I've raised a silly question.

I'm in the process of giving my clubmans engine a bit of a refresh.

Looking for some insight as to what my options are as far as clutch and flywheels go.

I wanted to source an Na6 flywheel so that it can be lightened and balanced with the rest of my bits prior to the rebuild, and was thinking of adding a exceedy heavy duty clutch to go with it.
I wanted to know, does the Na6 flywheel and clutch work with the Na8?

A side question is what is the maximum cam lift you can run on a BP head before you need to start machining bits to avoid the cam lobes getting damaged.

Yes.

The Exedy HD clutch is a very good choice too by the way. I had one fitted about a month ago, and it's much smoother than the previous factory one (admittedly the 'factory' one was after market in my case). No extra pedal pressure required if that's an issue for you, and very gentle take up too, so they're a win all round.

Nothing wrong with Exedy Heavy Duty organic, I have one in my car. But I'd go for an Xtreme Clutchs brand myself, just as good if not better then Exedy & usually a bit cheaper too. Plus Aussie made.

Flower yes, do not pass go or collect $200 without this mod.

It would also be very wise to speak to Richard at MX-5Plus re exhaust mods too, you will be quite suprised at what he will say and how few$$$$s it will cost.

Exedy is the OEM clutch. You might fit an hd clutch if you plan on giving the car a caning. I was advised to fit a std clutch/ pressure plate on an NB which is dríven "normally" and so far so good. Engine mods also need to be looked at in that a high KM engine can end up with a shortened life. I doubt that the engage disengage force will be the same std versus hd - there has to be more spring force on the hd?? Exedy or sponsor may be able to confirm. A std clutch will be cheaper than HD.

Not sure on the benefit of a lightened flywheel- my impression is that lugging power is sacrificed.

I think I'll be looking at getting a heavy duty aftermarket clutch be it exEedy or another brand.
I'm looking to build a tough streeter,I have sourced a block, crank,& rods,the block has been soniqued and tested looking upping the comp to 11:1 and going 2mm over 85.5mm taking the BP to 1952cc. The engine
is to be balanced before being screwed together, which is why I wanted the flywheel info.
I'm All about reducing reciprocal mass.

Not sure on cam choice as yet, don't have a spare head, and from what I can gather the 99 head has
more favourable features and has solid lifters vs HLA's.
Any ideas peeps?

My advice,stick with the 1800 flywheel,lighten it and NPC Clutches make a large diameter HD clutch with a bigger diameter clutch plate using Exedy components,much bigger clamping area,my NA has 190rwhp and it loves the NPC clutch.About the same price as Excedy.Their web site www.npcperformance.com.au

1998-2000 NB8A head has wider angle between intake & exhaust ports so flows better & as you say has solid lifters. Main problem is these heads are still scarce & therefore expensive.
