mod plate costs/compliance for rollbar

Ok, to fit a bolt in rear roll bar (with diagonal to rear mounts if it matters) in Qld for a mx5, I should certainly assume that a ModPlate is required despite being on rear "shelf"? (rather welded in)

Is it mainly because of their height in regards to occupants head?
Would this be same reasoning a "style bar" wouldn't need a od plate?
I'm gettin glittle confused over road legality over "roll bar" over "style bar" , and issues I may face.

Mainly I want to know of peoples experiances with costs for getting a BD bar or mx5plus bar Mod plated (rd legal ) for Qld.

Can it be as simple as bolting it in, strapping some appropriate thickness "foam" around it and paying old matey $** to check secured safely/complies and he secures approved modPlate ?

If you buy an MX5Plus bar, they can also provide and fit a mod plate and cert. From memory they charge ~$100, maybe a little more, but best to check with them. Their engraving of the mod plate is VERY nice too. I've seen mod plates with miss-spellings and all sorts of handwriting styles! So not an expensive exercise, certainly much less than the fine that you could get for not having a mod plate...

Oh, and yes, a roll bar does require modification approval. Not sure re style bars.

My MX5 Plus compliance plate cost $88 earlier this year - I went with the Twin Hoop roll bar.

Mod plates are pop rivetted in the engine bay? Drilling involved - ugh.

cool, So if say , I had a BD bar in my possession, no stickers or whatever, who confirms its ADR complient (if thats the right authorising body im referring to )... is it a matter of "Yup material is right thickness, welds, and brackets top notch annd secured in a safe manner for occupants, and it certainly meets requirements , heres your mod plate" ... ?

Not supposed to have some kind of certificate prior to seeking the mod plate certifying the roll bar or something ?!

Have a read HERE which might answer some of your questions or at least send you down the correct path.

A CAMS approved bar does not necessarily mean the bar is ADR approved (or an approved modification)
An ADR approved bar may not meet CAMS requirements.

You would have to think BD have engineered their bar and that they would be familiar with legislation / fitment related to each state and the purpose for which the bar is being fitted. A phone call would at least confirm if they do have this information.

You would like to think the BD bars comply and no doubt many people would assume they do comply.
From my research and interpretation of the state and national guidelines, I'm not so sure.
My reasons are detailed elsewhare on this forum.

FWIW, there are no Australia Design Rules (ADR's) for roll bars or roll cages. Modifications such as this are managed by each states "code of practice for light vehicle modification", as the states as a group have not adopted the "national code of practice for light vehicle modification" (which has been in floating around in various versions for the past decade).

All rather complicated stuff... :| seems to be engineer/authorised person reliant.
Not specificallly Qld specific. Any one in Brisbane with BD bar similar get certification/mod plate !?

This would be it... diagonal to top drivers side to rear stay. From what I can see makes use of the seat bolt hole mounts too...

After looking at the height of the bar, and the angle of roof line with hard top fitted, i'm not even confident it would fit under the hard top... Though I'd feeel more secure with a higher one...wether that makes any difference , strength wise I wouldn't know... maybe i'll pass and get a TB design...

With regards to complying the BD bar in Qld, there will be "Approved Persons" out there who will pass it. However, it does not comply with clause 2.2.2 : The mounting plates must be either aluminium or steel and must have a minimum thickness of 6mm. BD mounting plates are 3mm.

I'm not 100% on this one, but if the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Modification was applied, I think that there is a clause stating that the roll bar cannot attach to the body using the seat belt mounting points.....which the BD bar does.....but as I said previously, I don't believe any state has adopted the document as a whole.

I had my TB bar mod plated on the Gold Coast no worries. He looked at all the mounting points and what-not and made up a plate. I got a race seat on the plate also so 2 birds, one stone. The seat was much more of a hassle than the rollbar. Cost $100.

Ah yes, my mod plate included a couple of other things too, so probably why it cost up around the $100 or so mark compared to Lokiel at $88 just for the bar.
