Bring it along to an MX-5 club run, we might have some suggestions.

Could be a loose exhaust shield or the mount for the exhaust may have snapped and be rubbing.

Could also be something stuck down inside the drains on the 1/4 panel or a loose brake shield.

Depends what type of rattle.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your replies. I have found out why i had interference with the ipod/radio! Deviant was spot on with his diagnosis, it was the spark plug leads. I looked through the service history of the car and found out that it hadn't had new spark plug wires since 2003, and the cars done 50,000 kms since then. I ordered some new ones yesterday from my local Mazda dealer and fitted them today. Hey presto, problem solved, no more interference!

When i fitted the spark plug leads i found a loose bolt which was causing a metal plate to rattle. I was very excited thinking this could be my ellusive rattle! I tightened the bolt and went for a drive. No more rattling. However later the rattle appeared again. I checked the bolt and it was loose again. There isn't enough room to fit a nut on the bolt so i'm going to loctite it to stop it getting loose again. I was advised by the guy in Repco where i bought the loctite to buy the "removable strength loctite" just in case i ever needed to undo the bolt for any reason. So hopefully that will sort out my annoying rattle.

Finally last week i decided to get my car lowered with coilovers. Someone recommended Wheels World in Ozbourne Park who were very helpful. I went for Pedders, not too expensive and they give a good ride quality for road use which is what i wanted, i'm not going to race the car. What a transformation, the suspension is now set to 20 on the hardness setting with 30 being the maximum. It now just glides over bumps as apposed to crashing over them which is what happened with my old standard Bilsteins and factory springs. It feels like a new car!

Well done on the problem solving front.

Car looks much better now too. Which coilovers did you end up going with?

Hahahahahaa, you're not going to believe this, but on Monday I had to tighten this EXACT same bolt. I heard a vague high pitched whiny sort of noise (sorry Wayne), coming from the engine bay.

I found when I pushed on the coil bracket it went away. The bolts felt tight though, but I cracked them and re tightened them again and all was good. Never had this issue before.

Glad we found it eventually.
