broken dipstick

Postby greengoat » Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:51 pm

hey everybody,
can anybody tell me how to get a broken dipstick out, sitting about 6 inches down in its sheath. Anybody know how to remove dipstick sheath from the sump, or how to get the dipstick out
thanks for your help

Unless the dipstick is made of aluminium, slide a very strong magnet along the side of the sheath

1st thing that comes to mind, & simplest if it works, is try moving a strong magnet from the most easily accessible lowest point of the dipstick shaft upwards.

The dipstick sheath itself is pretty easy to remove. Just one bolt holds it on a couple of inches above the sump join and a small o-ring seals it. The broken dipstick will come out with it.

yeah, there's a 10mm bolt on the thin plate between the engine + transmission belhousing, reach under the heater hoses and you'll feel it.

then you can pull the dipstick sleeve upwards and you're set. The dipstick itself can't fall too far down into the sump as the windage(?) tray will prevent it from falling all the way in.

I have a cut down commodore diptsick (to the same length as a mazda one) with new marks scribed in, it was a $5 replacement.

Whilst the sleeve is out, the o ring will need replacing.
Huh?

The o-ring would be something like $387 from Mazda with a 3 day wait. Repco would be about 15c for the same thing.

I believe you guy's are being a bit harsh

Found a thread on the big forum which quotes between $3.28 to $5.20 US back in 2005
Should only be about $10 to $15 now, not the $387

If you must go genuine, the part number is 99541-00907 and is the same for all NA's and NB's
