Two Years On
May 2010 marks 2 years with the NC.
So naturally, I had to mark the occasion with a suitable edition.
Namely a much needed exhaust upgrade: the HKS Legamax Premium.

Image
That's the stock muffler on the left, HKS item on the right.

There has been a great deal of deliberation by yours truly over muffler selection for the NC.
I started this thread on MX5 Cartalk to assist with my research.
Primarily, the NC owner is faced with the question - stay with the dual muffler, or go single.
The benefits of the single muffler are obvious - free'er flowing, cheaper, and much lighter.
Greddy offer one, as does Goodwin Racing. Custom is also an option of course.

However as the numerous threads, and Brian Goodwin's tireless development has shown,
the 2L MZR engine in the NC LOVES to drone. It's also a fairly loud engine,
with some full exhaust setups seeing 90db at track days.
So any exhaust mods for a road going NC have to be treated with caution.

Initially, I was going to go with a single muffler. However, after much consideration,
and countless threads and You Tube videos, I had to conclude that sound
was more important than weight or horsepower. With a road car, I reason that max HP isn't
something I'm going to use all the time. However sound is something that is always there.
What's more, for a daily dríven car, it's a big part of the Roadster experience. So it's important to get it right.
There aren't many aftermarket exhausts getting around on NC's yet, so first person experiences were scarce.
I'd heard the Mazdaspeed muffler in person, and was not impressed. Plus the car had an aftermarket midpipe.
Lots of drone at constant throttle.

Meanwhile, I kept coming back to this video (and the one on the HKS website)

So, as some will know, a small band of us crossed the border into VIC in March
to rescue one of the greatest NA8's known to man-kind!
That car now belongs to Reggie, and the epic story of it's retrieval can be read on the Roadsterlife blog.
However, while in VIC I also met up with Andrew to purchase this exhaust.

The muffler install was straight forward, it's just a diff back muffler.

Image

Just a few bolts to undo, and there is a replacement gasket provided in the kit also.

Image

First drawback - stock muffler, 11kg, HKS Legamax: 12.5kg
Image

Looks quite cool though. Sits lower than the stock item, so you can see the twin cannisters.

Image

Soundwise, it's exactly what I am after.
Firstly when you turn the car over, you notice a bit more exhaust sound, and a much lower tone.
On the freeway, at constant throttle, I would say it's maybe 5% louder than stock.
Under load it's probably 15-20% louder.
It has a nice low hum up to 3000rpm, the note hardens, and above 4500rpm it develops a bit of a rasp.
Brian Goodwin has said a great deal about the drone the NC makes at 3000rpm on trailing throttle.
Well HKS seem to have pushed it further down - it get's some nice standing waves around 1500rpm.
Not the 'brown note' but close. Only at that rpm though, which is above idle and below cruising speed.
So you never notice it.

Driving impressions? Well, this is the good part.

Immediately, the 'seat-of-the-pants' dyno pointed to better response through almost the entire rev range.
Throttle response is improved again from when I added the Autoexe intake. In fact I would say it is now
where I have wanted it to be. Gear changes, and particularly rev matching, is that bit sweeter now.
Certainly, the sound has some impact on this. But it's no placebo effect.

Image

Basically, I was hoping for better tone, more noise at wide open throttle, and some improved
throttle response. The improvement in pickup throughout the rev range has surprised me.
Sound is great, exactly what I wanted. All in all, a very worthwhile upgrade.

Its surprising to find out the HKS sits lower than the OEM muffler considering it looks flatter on your comparison shot. But on closer inspection, you realise why. The brackets are longer and further away from the unit.

If I had an NC, I would have chosen dual exhaust as well. Looks great Matt.

Matt I would recommend adding the factory lower rear bumper lip

It should definitely improve the look of that rear end...well that's at least what I was planning on doing if I kept her.

Haha - funny you should mention that. The rear bumper was 'bruised' in a carpark recently, so I've been thinking about what bumper to replace it with if I was to do so. But those things aren't cheap. No more unnecessary mods planned for this year, apart from the few sitting around which are yet to go on the car (more on that later).

Should the time come though, Mazdaspeed front and rear is the only way to go IMHO.

You should come down to the Highlands for the 20th Anniversary weekend next month.

From where did you buy it? Does Andrew import them?

I'm in Melbourne, have an NC, and am very interested! Looks and sounds excellent!

Andrew imported this one for himself. I purchased it from him second hand.

Talk to Dan. He's a friend of mine, is based in Melbourne, and brings parts in from Japan on a regular basis.

Queen's Birthday Circuit Club @ Wakefield
I was a bit non-committal about Wakefield on Monday.
But I headed down anyway, top-down in the zero degree temps, and had a fantastic time as always.

Most of the day I had people to chat to and got roped into the article that Fast Fours were doing on the day.
Little Warren White did some hot laps in the El Roadster, he seemed to like it :D

Warren finished the day behind the wheel of an Evo though. I dare say that the experience has left a lasting impression!

I too spent some time out on the track in an Evo - only I was in the passengers seat.
The car in question: Nik Kalis' Time Attacking winning Evo 9.

Image

Nik's driving, Stu from Spinning Wheel's wizardry, and Indy from IS Motor Racing's handywork all combine to make a truly devastating combination.
I think our fastest laps were around the 1:06-1:07 range.
Nik has managed a low 1:05 in this car.
Oh, this is street registered car.
On street tires.

In a word: EPIC. Big thanks to Nik for letting me ride shotgun.

There were a number of NA's out also.

Image

Chris & The Two Mitches seemed to be very entertained, and all within a second or so of each other, which always makes for huge fun at the track.

Image

Image

Image

I only managed one session for myself.

Image

This was the first time out on the track with the HKS muffler.
The improvement was mostly in the gear changes.
Thanks to the better throttle response and the increased noise, it's just that bit easier to get it all right, particularly coming down into the fish hook, and into turn 10.
Maybe it's a little quicker down the straight, but I'm not that consistent enough on my turn 10 exit to say for sure!
It's also still too quiet for the track :D
But this car spends most of it's time on the road, so that's just fine.

Despite the low air temp, with the sun out, the track seemed grippier than it was on ANZAC Day.

Image

I was also on my road tires. They are pretty well finished, but Michelin's really hold on right to the death, so there was enough grip for some fun.
After my ANZAC Day experience, I can only conclude that I've got a lot more practice to do on semi's.
Although I didn't have a transponder on the car, with what little grip the Michelin's had left, I was still able to punch out some good, consistent laps.
I just love the accuracy and predictability of the Michelins.
I've really got to get used to the quicker grip-to-slip transition of the semi slicks.

I love the semi-slicks around MDTC, but with the lower speeds there, you don't get the high speed oversteer that the NC loves at Wakefield.
Particularly coming down off the hill through turn 5 and 6.

Next on the menu for the NC is an 80K service and some fresh road tires.
Apparently the PP2's are finished production now. I'm going to miss these tires.
We're also going to stiffening things up just a little.

Thanks to D4NM4C for all the awesome shots!

Have to concur with the Legamax premium. It's sound level, quality and lack of drone are simply sensational. I just want to drive it all the time. It sounds totally different from other 3rd party exhausts for the NC I've heard.

MX5 Club 20th Anniversary.

The club celebrated it's 20th anniversary last weekend.

Image

Almost 200 club members and friends were in attendance, and a
cavalcade of MX5's.

Image

Image

The venue was Centennial Vineyards in Bowral. Not far for us to
travel, so naturally we were among the stragglers!

Image

I remember when this place was first built and it has certainly come a
long way. It's a very upmarket restaurant normally, so Club members
were really in for a treat, particularly given the low price of admission for members!

Image

Not only were we treated to some gourmet soups, local meats and pasteries,
but each attendee received a commerative pin, and a small newsletter commemerating the event.

There was also a flyer detailing a brief history of the club, with some fascinating anecdotes within.
- For instance, we have Mazda Racing Team manager Alan Horsley to thank for the initative to form the club, back in 1991.
- The club's first day was a free lunch held by Mazda at a vineyard in Luddenham, June 24th, 1990.
- In 1997, the club played host to Toshihiko Hirai, the original chief engineer for the Eunos Roadster
project. 80 cars and 120 club members took him for a run through the Kangaroo Valley. Nice.

So, all very appropriate that the club celebrate at a winery!

Image

There are many who have commented to me about the 'generation gap' that
exists between the new world of car clubs, being online forums such as
this one, and the 'old' Incorporated car clubs, with their newsletters and elected committees.

Sure, we were probably among the youngest people there. It need not matter, in my opinion.
Not only do you quickly realise that there are many faster and more experienced drivers
than yourself in the room (or at your first club track day :D ) but more importantly, age is
kind of irrelevant when you encounter a club whose common thread is the enjoyment of
a driver's car such as Mazda's Roadster. Everyone here is an enthusiast!

Image

You also realise that your fanboyism, no matter how great, will probably be eclipsed by the next person you meet.
Take Bruce for instance, who we met over lunch. He lived in Alaska for 14 years, where he bought
his 1991 NA6. The car held such fond memories for him of his time in Alaska, that when he moved back to
Australia, he bought it with him. After all, plenty of room in the container for a little Miata.
It has since been an 18 month wait for the car to be converted to Right Hand Drive.
That's dedication! Possibly the only(?) MX5 in the country that can legitimately wear Miata badges and plates?

After lunch we took a quick wander to catch up with more people and take some shots.

Image

Such a variety of cars considering this is a club for just a single model of car.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Being a social even, and being that it was rather cold out, we didn't take all that many photos.
Full set of SLR and iPhone shots here.

Met some friends for a drive on the weekend.

Image

Driving top down on a sunny winters day is one of life's simple pleasures.

Image

Particularly when you have enthusiasts to share the road with

Image

And particularly when that road is the Macquarie Pass. I'll never tire of it :D

Image

Still loving the exhaust. Novelty value and all still remains intact.
Very glad I took the time to choose this item as carefully and as patiently as possible
Heartily recommend a decent muffler upgrade to other NC drivers out there.

Heck no. That's what I was most worried about. At constant throttle on a flat road (ie, cruise control) there's basically no difference to stock, in volume anyway. Under load it's a bit louder, but it doesn't drone. The only standing waves I get in the cabin are under load at 1500rpm, ie. in car parks.

Probably the best reference I can use is to say that at a track day, particularly with more uncompromised track cars around, this car still sounds stock by comparison.
