Changing na6 headlamps

Also, I know this is going to sound *really* vague but I honestly can't remember exactly where I found it. Have a look around on one of the UK based forums, someone did a really good write up on swapping in some motorbike headlights.

I too read a long long time ago (before I even had an NA), about a convertion that someone has done that used the Honda NSX headlights.

Goda Bankin do two versions of the kit that Hammer has shown earlier.

From memory:
Version 1 comes with adaptor plates to fit the rectangular headlamp inside the factory location and replacement retractor motor links. When the headlamps are raised, it is the same height as factory. Retails in Japan for JPY63,000 or AUD $722.

Version 2 has different adaptor plates and replacement retractor motor links but this kit requires the cutting of tops of the factory headlamp bezels which means that when the headlamps are raised they are a lower profile (flush with the height of the rectangular headlamp). Retails in Japan for JPY105,000 or AUS$1200.

Then you have to add shipping and applicable taxes.
I have sent an email through anyway to see if I can get a better price but without any serious numbers, I do not see the price moving much.

Group buy anyone? :mrgreen:

I'm thinking that this is something I could have a go at myself. Anyone got an Idea of the ideal rectangular headlight as starting point. Something I could locate at a wreckers perhaps?

I believe Nissan Silvia 180sx headlights will fit. The same goes for Toyota MR2 Mk1 and Mk2, Toyota Celica & FD RX-7. Though they might be as high as the round OEM ones once fitted.

The Honda NSX headlights are low profile, but I'm sure they are rare and as costly to get as the RS-Active kit.

sorry to be repetitive. Rectangular inserts have been around for a long time- many cars used them but more for style than performance. You can buy new inserts quite readily but of course you also need the other hardware. Inserts are made to a spec when we are talking of QH metal backed glass lense units. A high low insert can be had in 165x100mm or 200 x 142 mm and both of these use an H4 standard 60/55. Hella and Narva will sell these inserts.

My earlier advice in height was wrong ( not thinking) In both above instances the width is the longer dim so a 7in round is 178mm versus either 100 or 142mm without consideration of the carrier system.

While cruising the net today I found this DIY solution on an rx7 forum http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=843487
I'm thinking if it worked on the fd3s, why shouldn't it work on an na mx5? It's the same principal. The only qualm is the mount for the lamp to sit. I'm not sure how to work around that.
But as another forum member mentioned in this thread, you can readily purchase those somewhere. So I'm guessing if it were possible to scrounge up some low profile rectangular lamps and something to mount them in, it could be very possible to do this. I guess even if it meant making your own mount. I might try and work out some measurements this week and see if it's feasible to build my own using something else like sheetmetal rather than plasticand construct a light box to mount the lamp in. It won't looks as nice but I think if pressurepacked matte black it could work.

I'll do some more research! Big question I still have lurking in my mind is what lamps to use?

Of course, the easiest way around this is to sell your NA and just buy and NB!

Headlights are expensive as they have to moulded very accurately, otherwise the lights won't be worth spitting on.

I'm sure you can find something at the wreckers, but if you fit them, will they aim properly?
Will they shake around?

Lot's of things to consider.

I agree with Benny. Bear in mind that many see the pop ups as a distinctive feature of the NA. A 7inch round is a good lamp but perhaps this has not much to do with function but perceived aesthetics.

Don't get me wrong, I like the popup lights but I'd rather put in smaller square lights that don't up up as high. Like this for instance http://diymiata.com/lowpro.htm
As for the nb thing, I've been tempted a few times to trade up to an nb. Considering there isn't much of a price difference between a well kept na and an nb. Still though, as a lot of people here would probably find them self; I love my car and i'm not ready to part with it yet!
