Well, my car's been in the shop for a week now. Sent the service manager a link to NMX-516's original post on day 1. Today he rings me up very embarassed that they've tried everything then called in the Mazda Aus techs, and now have decided that it's the issue I pointed them at in the first place. Said "We're ordering a new pulley and timing belt".
"hmmmm...." I replied "Better actually check the crank keyway, you may need to order more than that"

Grrrr...

Lucky my young bloke's off the road with an accumulation of points ATM, and we have a spare car in the driveway.

Well I know nobody else other than myself will be doing my timing belt replacement. Having done my previous NA, I reckon I can handle this job on a nice Sunday arvo.

Geebus, sorry to hear that. May as well skip the 100K service and take the risk of the belt busting, as compared to the risk of a poor reinstallation.

It it not a risk, it is a certainty. Only question is when, where you are at the time, and just how inconvenient and expensive it will be to get it fixed. At least the (standard) engines are not interference like some others, so it will not be a full engine rebuild.

This is one of the silliest statements I have seen in a long time :roll:

I was only kidding.
But, compare it to the cost of a new crank. Even Mazda can't seem to do a belt change correctly.

Does anyone know the Mazda part number for the crank pulley bolt (NB8A)? My timng belt was (apparently) replaced by the dealer shortly before I bought my car in December, so they should have a record of the parts they used, I would like to check that the bolt was replaced at that time. Cheers
