8000 rpm on stock B6 rods?

Postby NitroDann » Tue May 04, 2010 3:37 pm

Hey guys,

Seems like something i should be able to get info on but no matter what i search i dont seem to ba able to find the andser i want.

I bought the B6 with big cams computer lsd and 6 speed box that was for sale here and it revs very nicely and smoothly to 8K.

Only thing is that the stock rods are still in place as far as im aware, thought the bottom end has been all balanced etc.

Is this something that isnt going to last long at the track? because it pulls nicely along at 8k but im not sure if the rods or oil pump will survive,

Thanks,
Dann

Slammer did it for years without any apparent issues. He was running a Microtech on a B6 and was very pleased about the extra 800rpm.

I have had my b6 over 8000rpm a number of times during it's 2 years of track days. And it would have kept going if it didin't get angry at me for driving with no water in the motor.

Indeed, I drove his car a couple of years ago and was blown away by how fast revving it was! I saw > 8000 rpm rather quickly! (and cold D01's didn't assist with stopping either!)

I know another 1.6 that used to be revved to 8K on the track, and it went on well, until the owner got it turboed and cracked a piston.
The engine was pulled out and pulled apart, and the rods looked OK.

I think if your engine is balanced, then the standard rods should be OK up to 8K, providing you don't keep it there for long.

Just a quick thought...

My ecu is set to 7600 limit on my B6, but the tacho reads just over 8k at the limiter. It could be just my car, but it would seem my tacho is not that accurate. Check the ecu settings if you have not already, you may find the limit is less than 8k.

I use my car for sprints and autotests, so it is always in the higher rev range and 'touch wood' it just keeps going.
