G'day ladies and gents,
was wondering on thoughts as to which tyres I should get for my NA.
currently it runs Silverstone FTZ Sport (from the dealer) in 195/50/15, and they've lasted near enough 50,000kms over the four years i've had the car.
I'd like something that's capable of spirited runs (mainly on the OPH these days) but also normal driving. To give an indication of what it'll deal with i'm planning a trip Sydney->Canberra->Adelaide->Great Ocean Road->Melbourne and back via the coast.
and preferably something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

performance & cheap don't come in the same package.
I've just picked up Toyo R1R at mates rates......I'm starting to warm up to them.
Probably not as exiting to drive as the Azenis RT215's but probably on par with the azenis RT615.
On the other hand everyones definition of exiting is a little different. I read you had the same tyres for 4 years.....mmmm I don't know anything about the Silver Stones. But I get the impression. Our opinions will differ
If you do 10k km PA on average I'd stick to something that would last you about 20k km or about 2 years. Get the best performance tyre within that catergory.
I do about the same amount of Km's.....But I also like to get the best out of my tyres. Its just been reiterated because the last 18mths I've been driving around with aged 2nd hand tyres & in comparison they were crap.
Noise factor may also influence your enjoyment in a tyre. But my car is so obnoxioulsy loud the tyres are not what's been making me deaf.

Just fitted some Dunlop DZ Sport Z1 on original 14x5.5" rims in 185x60x14.

Yeah, i've noticed that one. But thats kinda what i'm getting at. I'm not after a full performance tyre, rather something that will handle the odd run here and there, but last for a little while too.

Tyres compounds start deteriorating after 2 years or so.
with the amount of K's you do..... that would fit you right into that catergory that I'm raving about. But you have indicated you're not really interested in that catergory. And thats fine. This catergory is starting to be referd to as S-comp tyres. Don't ask me why. Its a street tyre with stiff sidewalls, very soft road compound but sometimes with semislick looking tread patterns. Its a step below proper semi slicks. They tend not to get affected by heat cycles, but usually by the end of thier life they are usually pretty sh*t.
by the sounds of it you want to be looking at a high performance Tyre. most of those will probably last you 30-40k km.

Bridgstone Adrenalin comes to mind. or something equivelent.

Michelins always been happy with them on the family hack but not cheap

Ran various 185/60x14 Bridgestone Potenzas for a long time on NA6 & NA8 & was very happy with them. Now running 195/50x15 Michelin PP2 on NA8 & also very happy with them, but it sounds like they've got fairly expensive of late.
Believe the PS3 has taken over from PP2, but Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001 certainly seems very popular if you're looking for something less expensive than the PP2:

Do a bit of a hunt around and you will find lots of people in the Aus car scene are now using that company in the USA and saving themselves the price of a second set of tyres!
I personally know someone that saved himself AU$2000 on a set of 20 inch tyres for a high end Lexus.
Shipping to Perth was AU$300 and the tyres landed on his doorstep in 7 days. They were priced below the $1000 import tax limit too. He just had to send an email to open a line of communication with them as their website is not set up for international orders.
I think you would be mad not to use your money to buy the abolute best you can:

Going from my friends experience they would be around AU$900 (at todays exchange rate) for the set by the time you have paid shipping and had them fitted.
You would be lucky to get a set of LingoLong Ditchfinder 'performance' tyres for that if you shop locally.
