My guess is a faulty coil pack. Symptoms are similar.

Coil packs are a known problem for a NB8A
This is a NB8B which has Coil on Plug

Which can also be faulty
My coilpacks are almost dead, car is down on power and sluggish. I swapped in some borrowed coilpacks and the car was back to normal so I'm ordering a new set of coilpacks shortly (from the US for $75 AU each, rather than the $280 each Mazda want for them here)

Montgomery Mazda

They also have the cam angle sensors for about $85 so I'll probably grab one of them as well. Shipping works out to be about $70 for the two coilpacks, two soft top latches and the cam angle sensor.

that's pretty good, i just purchased a new cam angle sensor from mx5parts, about $73 AUD delivered.
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... ts_id/1173
it comes down to 39.33 pounds without the vat plus 5.21 pounds for shipping

my car has started doing it now . im at 97k kms and will be doing the timing belt/ waterpump/ CAS/ fuel filter etc etc in the coming weeks (got all the bits coming from MX5.co.uk)
it only does it when its cold up until the needle starts to move into the normal temp range.
it mainly struggles and almost surges around the 2-3000 rpm mark.
would the CAS be a common diagnosis for this problem? i hope so

My guess is its unlikely to be the Cam Angle Sensor as your issues are when the engine is cold/cool
The Cam Angle Sensor appears to breaks down when it becomes hot.
This can be through heat soak like sliq experienced or working hard on a hot day with little airflow like I had in a Motorkhana.

de bounce is correct. car only started to splutter and die once it was warmed up/hot. when i started my car up, it took a good 5 minutes of hammering for the symptoms to become evident.
if its the CAS problem, the car wouldn't rev past 2,000rpm, gradually dropping to 800-900rpm, then stalling.
