Slippage is not normal unless you are slow to release the clutch pedal.
To test the clutch, get up to around 30km/h, press in the clutch pedal, rev it to 5 or 6 K and hold it there, then dump the clutch.
If the engine starts to bog down, or slows down appreciably, then your clutch is fine, but if the revs soar or stay the same after you dump the clutch, then you have a slipping clutch.
If the clutch is going, you may not always be able to tell from the way the car revs while in gear, but you should be able to smell a slipping clutch.
