So I shagged my clutch

Hey all

So I shagged my cltch at 150k and my mechanic has ordered me a factory replacement bt I was wondering am I better off just spending the extra and getting a heavy duty clutch put in. or will it make minimal difference in my overall cars performance. I m not planning on going Turbo, but soon coilovers and a lsd then a bit of track work

I'd upgrade it whilst it was out. A exedy sports tuff would do nicely and are pretty cheap at $3-400.

x2 for the Exedy Sports Tuff. I've used one for a couple of years now in city, country and track and it's a better clutch all round than OEM.

I also replaced my clutch at around 150 k km, I got an Exeedy sports tuff clutch off the forums for $300 shipped it was a good deal so I couldnt resist.

It's good its easy to push the pedal down lots of feel and engagement.

If I had my way again I would spend an extra 100 bux and get an ACT Stage 1, more beefy so you can abuse it, something that bites and holds hard even if it requires a bit more pedal effort.

I thought I would have to change the clutch again if i went turbo, (Ive done it before but cbf doin it twice)

if you don't have a 1.6 then grab a 1.6 flywheel and bobs your uncle

edit just realised you have an NB, a 1.6 litre flywheel are lighter then the 1.8 flywheels. So your killing two birds with one stone for next to nothing!

You can get a 1.6 flywheel pretty cheap, just have a look on eBay and the vendors on the forum.

I'm not sure if the clutch/flywheel from a TX3/Astina SP BP engine is the same as that of an MX5, but I also use an Exedy Sports Tuff clutch in my KF Laser TX3. It only feels a fraction firmer than standard so no sore left leg. Price-wise, I paid $240 from Burson Autoparts, but then discovered that the mob machining my flywheel were Exedy distributors. He could have done it for $180! All I can say is, shop around - $300 seems a bit pricey to me.

I have an Exedy Sports Tuff too, & while nothing wrong with it at all, I'd go for a heavy duty organic clutch from Xtreme Clutches. Just as good if not better plus a bit cheaper. Someones gotta support Aussie made, keep someone employed..

Timely topic this one... mechanic just told me I need to replace my clutch so i'm looking for recommendation other than just getting the stock item.

- Want something that requires the same amount of force or preferably less to push down on the pedal (don't want it to turn into a workout);
- Assuming that OEM items are more expensive, I'm hoping that an aftermarket one will be cheaper if not at least better quality;
- Same if not better durability / longevity
- No intension of going turbo for the time being (at least for another 2 years);

EDIT: Also, how much should it normally cost for the cost of parts, changing the transmission oil and labour? my mechanic quoted me $1100... is that reasonable?

who's your mechanic? how many kms has it done?

from recollection , your car was in mint condition so i didn't think it'd need to get its clutch changed.

you're looking at about $800ish installed. $400ish for the clutch and $400ish for the install

It's only done 68kkms.

The thing is that this is my first manual car and i don't know 'when' do i need to have it changed.

From what you say... $1100 does sound very dear - it's with a garage that my family has used for ages called Centennial Park Automotive near Surry Hills.

Maybe i should give someone else a shot - anyone near the city or the East that people can recommend? (I only have 1 car)

Have you noticed any slipping or the like?

I doubt you would need a clutch change with that many kms, but if you do, I'd say the exedy sports tuff again.

Well, when i change from 1st to 2nd at around 4000rpm, there is some slippage but i thought that was 'normal'?

Otherwise, there's been no slippage when gears are engaged.

Any specific tests that i can do?
