But, does more roll does imply less mechanical grip?

Stock NC's produce more cornering gee's then any previous MX5. For the same reason, people who race NC's (eg. Zane) will tell you that the greater wheel travel afforded by the NC's design, like an open wheeler, means that on some circuits the racing line for an NC is more like an open wheeler and quite different to an NA/NB. More suspension arc means the suspension can carry more load/unload, rather than running out of travel which can result in compression pushing the tires beyond their grip limit. Zane described this exact scenario too me with regards to driving NA/NB vs NC around Oran Park (RIP!).

I used to think more roll = less grip, but the more cars I drive, the more I think chassis design principals are not that simple!

I wasn't inferring more roll= less grip. But it certainly isnt nice to drive a car with lots of roll, slow response time, easily unsettled, which is why race cars have uber stiff suspension, only needs to be as soft as required to absorb the bumps. Open wheelers have very stiff suspension. The line taken for an open wheeler is more to do with having much more acceleration than an mx5, they can "v" corners where if you did it with an mx5 you'd lose too much speed and so take too long to regain it. NC is much faster than the na/nb. You can have lowered/stiff suspension and still not hit the bump stops, so not sure what you mean by the load/unload comment...

Before this goes even further OT, I think you've probably highlighted why most road users would choose sways - because they inspire more confidence in most drivers. It's not really a question of mechanical grip.
FWIW, Chris only uses a slightly thicker rear sway in his NC's to neutralise the cars handling. But as you've said, suspension choice, tire choice etc all play a role as well.
For trackdays and khanas on billiard table smooth surfaces (race cars), a stiffer roll is obviously an advantage combined with more rubber etc. But for a road car, not always the case.

Haha, it's true. Aftermarket wheels demand it to an extent. I look at my car sometimes and think I could go lower. But the inconveniance would be too great. Maybe down the track though. Before that I would like to explore slightly wider wheels/offset.
