Great Alpine Way plus Mount Buffalo

On our return from NatMeet 2010 we enjoyed the Great Alpine Way. A road not to be missed by serious tourers and those who enjoy a bit of “mountain driving”.

This is not a short stretch of road as nominated in a lot of threads here; this is 260 kilometres over a few hours and is MX-5 heaven.

Start in Bairnsdale after breakfast and head to Bright for lunch.

Fantastic piece of road. Wide smooth flowing corners going from sea level, through valleys with streams up to the top of Mount Hotham. From Hotham down to Bright (we had rain, fine hail and fog) it’s tight and very twisty. Take care because if you leave the road it’s a looooong way down. Luckily we couldn’t see.

Then after lunch, if you haven’t had enough and want to try for an even better piece of twisting road with spectacular views head for Mount Buffalo. If you have adjustable shocks, crank them up a couple of clicks before leaving Bright.

We did the Buffalo run on a Tuesday and didn’t pass another car on the way up or the way down the mountain.

Great road :!: Our group did the GOR and Skenes Creek Rd (Portland - Geelong) on the Wednesday of the return trip.

Thursday we ran Geelong - Lakes Entrance - Mt Hotham - Bright. Some who hadn't seen it shot up to Falls Ck and back before dinner. I was thinking about Mt Buffalo - damn, should have done it!

Friday we went Corryong - Khancoban - Thredbo - Jindabyne - Cooma - Goulburn. My arms were tired by now.

Saturday was Oberon - Bathurst ( 3 laps) - Richmond/Windsor (Bells Line Of Road etc.) - Putty Rd - Tamworth.

Last day was Armidale - Waterfall Way - Tyringham - Grafton - Lismore - M1 to home.

An epic twisty trip.

Neither of the google maps links worked :(

Sounds like a hell of a drive though!

Its a very good run. Would be great to see an event to do it with a few other 5's.
