The NB8B onwards (october 2000 onwards) uses coil on plug ignition with coilpacks sitting over 2 sparkplugs, and plug wires to the other two plugs
You may be able to perform a transplant of the system, although I'm not sure of the complexities involved...

Supreme Blue NB8B, 1:16.98 at Wakefield when stock, but it's not stock any more...

Colour me ignorant, but what are the advantages to upgrading from stock ignition to COPs? I've always guessed that its simply for a stronger spark for when you're running a lot of boost, but I have no idea about the specifics.

I paid $90 for four (cf $800 - $1000 for two sets of NB8A coil packs), plus a slab for the connectors .
They will fire sequential (need an ECU for this).
They give a better spark at high RPM/boost (racecar has 8000rpm redline).
I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)
