Hi guys,
So the story is that 'MX52NV' (the purple one) only comes out to do Autotests & Sprints and with semi-slicks on all the time, it was never going to be a daily driver anymore. So with the sale of EVO VIII MR due to a job change and lack of use, my wife and I agreed that I would still need a runabout on days where we could not share the car to get to work (we now work at the same place). A car that we would not worry about being parked out on the driveway. We agreed on a NA6 (cheap and I had so many parts for it) and started looking for a good example in W.A. that had aircon, power-steering (for those that know about my "little" fall - my wrist is not quite 100%) and a hardtop (a little added security).

I was pretty shocked at the condition of some of the MX5s I saw. I even saw one that was not running and the whole boot had rust! I must admit that at times, I wanted to write down a sheet of things to rectify for each seller. Anyway, after being a good samaritan to a few sellers (you know who you are), I finally saw Daniel's (aka Mr Rotary's) advert on this forum (see below). After a quick call and arranging a time to come see the car, we were very happy with the overall condition of the car (albeit with 240,000 kms on the odometer, it meant that I was probably going to either drop in my other spare BP or rebuild the B6). Anyway, a deal was negotiated and after transferring the money, Daniel and his partner were waving goodbyes that very Friday.

Here is the For Sale post:

Due to a change in job position, it’s unfortunately time to sell my MX-5 and have now purchased another vehicle to better suit my needs. My MX-5 has been serviced reguarly, only uses ultimate 98 and has been ultra reliable and other than a flat battery, has never broken down on me ever in over 4 years of ownership. Condition is what you expect for a vehicle of it’s age. Vehicle imported from Japan under 15 year rule by myself in late 2005. I have receipts for most things listed.

Description:
- Silver
- 240,000 km’s
- 5sp Manual
- Hardtop Included (worth $1200)
- LSD
- Air-con and power steering
- Manual Winders
- Immobilisor

Engine/Transmission
- Timing belt replaced at 200,000km (incl. Water pump, belts, radiator hoses, bottom seal, key and bolt)
- Mines B63H VX ECU
Features: 180km/h top speed limiter removed
Shift rev limiter timing
Modification of fuel corection map & ignition map
Change quorum (k)
Change mapping (RPM, injection time)
Modify correction points
- 4-2-1 Extractors
- 2 ½” exhaust
- Magnaflow high flow catalytic convertor
- Mazda Speed cold air intake with K&N air filter
- Exedy clutch & Fidanza lightweight flyweel (replaced approx. 215,000km – new gearbox boots, gearbox seal and heater hoses where also installed)

Suspension/Brakes
- NA8 front discs
- Bendix Ultimate pads front & rear
- Fatcat Motorsports bump stops
- KYB AGX Shock Absorbers
- Standard Height King Springs
- NA8 front & rear underbody bracing
- 185/60/14 Bridgestone GIII Tyres

- Alpine SPX-13REF - RRP $549 (Manual & Box included)
- Dynamat to doors around speakers.
- New centre console ‘tombstone’ and DIN pocket to suit stereo (installed Sep 08)
- New leather gear shift gaiter (replaced Aug 09)
- Nismo black ball shift knob
- Chrome Sill Plates
- Original Mazda Floor Mats
- Strengthened accelerator pedal bracket for better throttle response and correctly placed for heel & toe braking

I’ll throw in the list of spares shown below (worth $800+) for anyone from this website only if the price does not vary considerably. Please make sure you mention this is where you spotted the Ad!

Spares included
- Stock Jap import ECU
- Standard air filter box
- Master Cylinder brace (New)
- NA8 proportioning valve (had for over a year but never really needed it)
- Bendix reconditioned rear brake callipers NIB (RRP $500+)

The small writing….
· Soft top in good condition with no rips however the plastic window has a rip in it. In all the years I have owned the car, I have never had the hardtop off so this has never been an issue for me.
· Rear calipers have a small leak however I have had the new calipers for over a year and havn’t yet changed them over as the leak has never really been a big issue.

NA6 (silver)

Postby mx52nv » Sun Mar 21, 2010 3:34 pm

Okay so you knew there was going to be more. My wife and I took the NA6 on its maiden run with the MX5 Club of WA monthly cruise up into the hills. What a great time we had as all the sounds and feelings that only the "original" NA6 could provide! We also gave a few members a surprise when we pulled up alongside as they are so used to see us in 'MX52NV'. We were all smiles by the time we reached the final stop for lunch and drinks.

Some pics on the day:
Third from the left.

My "artistic shot" with the crap iPhone camera. Dig the reflection of the road through the "Roadster" wording?
Image

After realising that I was never going to leave it quite stock, I started thinking of theme I would like to follow for "NA6". JDM? CR.net? Then I went rummaging through the garage for bits to swap, replace or add and for inspiration. The first thing I thought of was the steering wheel as the Italian made wooden one just did not float my boat especially for my non-limited edition (without the tan interior). So I off to the garage to see what I could find and I found a Nardi wheel which I still had off a NA8.

Before I could even put this one on, I saw a WolfV4 Plus for sale on the forum by daffyflyer and before you can say "I LOVE PLUG IN ECUs", I did a deal with him and it was mine  :
daffyflyer wrote:Wolf3d V4.72 ECU

Selling as no one in canberra wants to tune it

$600 approx?

Will ship places..

SOLD to Les about 2hrs after i posted
Okay, so now I had an ECU which I had some intimate knowledge (Wheelspin Performance was the WA distributor and we put the first WolfV500 into Simon's SE in 2006).

At around the same time, my ASI 52mm alloy radiator has arrived. Along with my new rims that I am now an authorised dealer in WA for. Here is a teaser pic:
Mmmmm.... dish.....
Image

However, since I do not have a workshop now and my hands are not all that great anymore, I asked Steve (the man who saved my life from my fall and has been dynotuning all my customers' and my cars since 2000) if he would help work on this. A sucker for punishment, he said: "Okay." I might add that this is on top of building the race engine for 'MX52NV' as well...

Anyway, while I am on my way to Steve's place, I am thinking of the $2k Yager modified B6 head, Yager cams/gears and throttle bodies that was still sitting in his shed. It came off a Ford Escort race car when it upgraded to a BP. When I get there, Steve walks me to the section in the shed, points to the head and while smiling says: "Les...this would be awesome on your car". I put up a little bit of a protest by mumbling something about "budget" and "my wife will kill me".

Then I bought it for $500.

So then the next day I get the following photo sent to my phone from Steve:
Image

So the throttle bodies went on but not the Yager modified head as the B6 bottom end was 240,000kms old. Need to find time to clean the whole engine bay as well. The NA6 goes on the dyno on Monday/Tuesday and then I get it back in time for some new tyres and an alignment.

A full service of all fluids and filters yielded some interesting information about the car and its life. More to come on this.

Phew! Okay that is it for now.

Things coming:

1) TB Single Hooped Roll bar is on its way here along with normal black factory handbrake covers (thanks Richard @ MX5 Plus). I am the WA dealer for TB bars, so please feel free to contact me for any of the TB bars. All bars come bare without powdercoating. Shipping may damage the paint and will cost more to ship if not flat packed.
Prices are:
Single Hooped - $740 + $55 shipping (min 2 bars)
Doube Hooped - $670 + $55 shipping (min 2 cars)
If you are in a hurry then it will be $110 for shipping if no one shares the packing box.

2) Garage Vary Lip - thanks Garage Vary.
3) Clear side indicators, clear reflectors, clear third brake light and stubby antenna - thanks to my friends from MX5 Parts UK.

I forgot to mention that I just ordered a set of TEIN MONOFLEX, motor kit and the EDFC as long as the price I was offered is still valid. I may put it on 'MX52NV' and swap the Koni/Sparco combo into 'NA6'. Photos will be forthcoming if it all works out.

Today is a National Holiday in Japan and it is killing me not knowing if I got the TEINs at that special price I was offered. :P
And I am eagerly waiting for a call from Steve at the dyno about the power of my 240,000km B6 motor!
However, my Vary lip will be here by week's end.

Duj - Actually they are Axis OldSkools!
Now available from MX5 Shop in WA in black or gold centre with polished lips for $860 per set delivered (shameless plug).

Good news: I have bought the TEIN MONOFLEX, Motor kit & EDFC! It is now on its way from Japan.
The Garage Vary lip, clear reflectors, side indicators and third brake light are here!
TB Single Hoop Bar is also here (missing some bits though so Richard will send it through).

Garage Vary Lip for NA (still in bubblewrap  )

Bad news:
On the dyno, oil started leaking badly from the front of the motor between the head and block. Made 73rwkw before we stopped and we pulled her off. I'm going to takeoff the head and see what's the problem. Looks like even with two NAs, my luck has run out! So sharing a NC2 with zombie (thanks Matt and I owe you one) at the Autotest this Sunday. Not quite sure what I'm going to do for the Sprint on Good Friday ... :|

*sigh* - that's just the way it is when you play around with cars!

Congrats Les - thought that silver na6 looked very tidy when it came up for sale earlier this year.

TEIN MONOFLEX, EDFC and the Motor kit arrived yesterday!
I think I will swap the Koni suspension out of 'MX52NV' and into the silver NA6.
Not sure what I am going to do with the King/AGX combination in the silver NA6 though...
