Well I did it, I made my oil pressure gauge do more than be an elaborate idiot light. I got the sender from Airco in Sydney, it even has the right thread so no adapter needed. Now you might think from the descriptions on Miatanet that this is a dead easy job, ha ha ha. It might be on a left hand drive Miata (like I used to have back in Canada), but here the steering shaft goes right through the space where you can reach in to sender. Other than this extremely ackward spot the rest of the install is very easy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The part number is 360.007 (ignore the part numbers on Miatanet they are not the same here in Aus). I got it from Airco in Marrickville 9560 2755 and it was $66.00. This sender has the correct thread to bolt right in with no adapter. This sender expects a round female connetor so I made an adpater with a male spade on one end and a female round (bayonet?) on the other.
It is a tight working area as I mentioned earlier. I took off the plastic undertray, the intake manifold brace and the oil filter. I should have used a 17mm crowsfoot to tighten the sender but I couldn't find one so I carefully used a pair of Vice Grips on the body of the sender. I did move the needle (ignition on, sender wire disconncted, set the needle to the high mark). Follow the directions on Miatanet for removng the intrument panel. You have to give it a good solid tug but it is a straight forward job.
At start up the needle points to the 3/4 mark, when hot and idling the 1/4 mark. Not a crucial mod but I am an original old fart who thinks sports cars should have working guages (goes way back to a 1959 MGA in my youth).
By the way I also picked up a clock and a voltmeter which will go in DIN 1 sized panel above the stereo I installed to replace the radio/cassette and seperate CD player. Pictures coming soon.
regards
Doug
