R compound tyres?

If you go for R888s, don't go crazy on the tread width relative to the wheel width.

Unless the construction has changed, the general consensus seems to be that tyre operates best with the tyre wall at 90 degs to the tread. this is not a problem as long as you correctly size the tyre to the wheel. I have 195/50/15 R888 on 6.5 inch width rims and they fit nicely. A 205 would probably be too big for a 6.5 inch rim.

The dealer should be able to guide you on this

My opinion - quick to warm up, consistant grip, good wearing, so a good comprimise with regards to speed vs life. I have done a season of sprints, several autotests, used them on the road a bit (club runs) and they still have some life left in them, not much though. They don't seem to like sitting in the garage on the car - you get a vibration for the first few kms when you drive again, but I think this is very common with R-comp tyres.

I think I am going to try the Yokos next in search of a bit more speed, but if the wear is not good, I will be back on the R888s!

I'm using Yoko A048s as my trackday tire, but I'll most likely be trying R888's next. From all the views I've canvassed, they are a great buy if you want a semi-slick style tire with a decent lifespan at a reasonable price. They seem to withstand lots of heat cycles, which is perfect for track-day use.
For all out peformance though, the tire that has most impressed me on the track would be the Bridgestone RE55S.

I've not run R specs for a few years and never on an MX5.
I just picked up a set of Toyo R888 tyres (205/50/15 GG compound) and was wondering what a good idea on starting pressures would be. I used to run my Yoko 032r's at around 25-28 cold on my Escort.

I considered the Dunlops but at an extra $90 a tyre it made the choice to go Toyo a bit easier.

28 cold for me. this was what ray at reservoir tyrepower advised and it's worked for me so far.

so the tyres have arrived bruce?! p.i. should be very interesting, seeing as we're now in the same class and both running the same tyres :twisted:

24-25 cold on a warm day for R888s, Bruce, aiming for 31 hot. You can start at 28-29 when you race in NSW floodwaters.

You've saved your money well. I went from R888s to Dunlop D03s. I prefer the R888s: equal grip, better under brakes, longer life (better treadwear and less heat cycle issues).

I usually put 25-27 in mine cold and bleed them hot down to 30-32 as see fit.

Interested to know what compound you got Phil, as I got the second hardest (MH) and back to back at the last PI meet with the R888s, they were consistently 1/2 second quicker, and felt much nicer to drive on.. And this was their third event so plenty of heat cycles though them.
Certainly agree though that wear is nowhere as good as the R888s and will probably go back to R888 simply for cost reasons so can last a whole season on one set. (Though if a money tree grew in my back yard, I'd put the DZ03s on again in a heartbeat...

Rascal's lapping PI 3-4 secs faster than me in a car that on paper should be about 1 sec quicker. I'd take that into account when comparing advice.

Damn, so it won't fit my car then. I'd say that the sorts of mods I'd have to do to increase power to 2,000 gigawatts would probably take me out of Modified class.

edit: Alex says this may not be the right flux capacitor anyway. The one we need is the 1.21 gigawatt model
