Where do you guys get PISTON RINGS from?

Postby Dweezle » Fri Mar 19, 2010 1:45 pm

Hi all

Flyin Miata just dont seem to be getting back to me, if they have piston rings or not.
I would get them at the same time i get there engine rebuild kit.

I am after Standard size for a NA6.

Just wondering where everyone else gets them in Aus from?

I had very good experiences with these people last year - NPR rings, ACL bearings, pumps, belts, gasket sets, etc . All were OEM quality, except of course the Oz-made ACL stuff which was much better.

I second the advice of getting it from a reputable seller on Ebay. That's what I did for my ACL race bearings and thrust washers.

I don't think FM sells OEM piston rings. Their pistons rings are packaged with the Wiseco pistons they offer.

Hey Mate,
Repco or any real spare parts shop can get them for you , just remember to measure the oil control ring before you order rings. It will be either 3mm or 4mm. Buy ACL or any ring brand recommended by your engine reconditioner and DON"T get file to fit!!!!!

CNS prices were 50-75% less than local outlets, sadly even for the Australian made parts (go figure  ). Things would be even better this year given the state of the US peso.

Basically everything needed to rebuilt your engine.
All gaskets, Bearings, blah blah blah..

But no Piston rings, Water pump, Oil Pump.

Still can not work out if its a better buy then seperatly, but seems very much EASIER  yes im Lazy..

Thanks for everyones help so far.

CNS seem to be a winner with Piston Rings.. There prices are crazy cheap compared to AUS.

Thanks for the info. Ok I looked at the list but am a little puzzled. No mention of pistons and my assumption maybe wrong is that an engine may require a rebore and then oversize pistons and presumably rings to suit. Standard rings- would they only fit a bore which is standard?? PS I would be guided by pros like TBRO- cheap parts are only good if the quality is known. These web sites can write anything they like but you only want ( and they maybe fine) good quality for something that you cannot readily replace.

TBRO has been a huge help to me so far..!!! I owe that guy 8)

Yeah, if you rebored it then you would need oversized pistons and rings.
I am just going to hone them, and stay standard. My engine is a very low K one and i am just freshing it up.
But definitely going along with the Buying Quality Gear, while its apart. :D

I did a full re-build last year using entirely CNS supplied bits. The only problem I've had since was a cam cover gasket leak. I researched avery component from CNS before I bought it and examined every bit before I installed it. Everything fitted straight in and most bits were better than OEM quality.

I figured that these parts were better than the OEM ones I replaced: NPR rings, ACL bearings, water pump, most gaskets (esp the inlet and exhaust manifold ones).

These parts were about OEM equivalent: head gasket, timing belt, cam seals.

These parts were not so good: cam cover gasket, crank front and rear seals, timing belt pulleys.

If I did it again I'd buy all CNS again but substitute crank and cam cover seals with Mazda OEMs.

A few other forumites have also successfully gone with CNS I believe.

OEM is in most instances is likely to be the best. Reason is that the car co will dictate the spec and parts are tested before approval- testing can be a very onerous requirement and an aftermarket supplier is essentially not being checked. OEM is however made to a price so in theory at least an aftermarket item could be superior. You cannot really tell a lot by visual inspection. For many components an aftermarket supplier will never make quality tooling because they will not get a payback.

Still that does not mean that aftermarket is not good esp since some of it is made by OEM suppliers. Looks like dweezle has covered all angles

Just something else to check when you're doing this, dweez. I had 2 heads, both with about 170ks on them. Only 2 of the 32 valve springs fell within Mazda tolerances in a spring compression test.
