wondering if any one can help me out with this

im thinking about having my car reprayed eventually but have no idea what it would cost so if any one can help me out if theyve had something similar done on a ball park price so i can start putting cash away.

car is a nb8a want to have the whole car reprayed in the same factory black colour not worried about engine bay or inside doors
im quite happy to do a lot of the prep work myself i.e. pulling lights, badges, indicators etc etc probably even sanding back current paint

pretty much all i want to do is clean up a lot of scratches swirls stone chips etc etc and have it looking new again

It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, be wary because the price doesn't always reflect the quality,you can pay a fortune and still get a shitty job and NEVER pay in advance.

To give you an idea, I was talking to a dealer in Port Melb a few months ago that wrongly advertised a black SP for sale, but turned out it was an standard black NB8B, with quite a few paint chips. Anyhow, they were going to have it fully resprayed by a semi-retired guy that does good work for them for $2k-$3k.

well just got off the phone from hume smash and got some very good advice and some rough ball park sort of area pricing so i know what is realistic.
seem like good blokes. but yeah think ill be just doing the front bumper and maybe boot lid

these are obviously not quotes but the ball parks were about $4k for whole car or $600ish for the front bumper information for any one thats contemplating similar ideas

that sort of area i guess. that was supplying new bumper skin all the prep work drive in drive out job done properly

but as i said. its not a quote. its just a top of the head ball park price. to get a proper price your probably best off giving them a call too.

the only reason i mentioned the price was because im sure there are other people like myself that jsut have absolutley no idea what it costs lol could be $800 or $8000 :mrgreen:

I had my front bar, rear bar, rear beaver and hardtop all resprayed for $800 - drive in, drive out. Also included a full buff and polish. It was done "after hours" at a small smash repair place. If you're prepared to let them have the car for a bit longer so they can work on it whenever there's some downtime, then you can usually get a better deal. I was delighted with the quality of the work too. Admittedly, they didn't remove the window from the hardtop, just masked it off, so that part of the job isn't as good as it could be. And for an extra $300, I had a million dents removed.

one thing you need to keep in mind is the quality of the workmanship. when it comes to paint, the majority of the cost comes down to labour. it's not just prepping surfaces for painting either - think about the labour required to remove and refit various parts to the car. also, i believe that paint stripping and prepping plastic parts for repainting is considerably more difficult than metal panels.

hume smash pride themselves in delivering results which are as close to OEM "as-new" quality as possible and they go to painstaking lengths to make their repair jobs as invisible as possible (including things like paint thickness), when most other places will cut corners in areas where the owner will not be looking. they may seem expensive - i don't believe that they are - but you can be sure that the job will be done properly.

but different people will have a different ideas about what constitutes "good quality" work, and i understand that not everyone is always looking for 100% quality all the time. just my 2c.

Pity the pros do not give us some input. What I can say is that painting is 90% preparation. Preparing a car which might have some body damage and poor paint is a job for people who know what they are doing Filling panels / undercoating / spray putty/ guide coats etc is time consuming and exacting work.If it is not prepared properly it will come out looking terrible- you might wish you did not attempt it. Guys who do up their TR's MG's Jags etc spend lots of money- nothing to hear that the repaint cost +$10,000. Just look at the cost of minor dings on cars to see that $5K is minor.

Also look at what system they are using for painting- modern paint is oven baked which means a spray booth not old style more forgiving acrylic finishes which lend themselves to respraying and retouching panels. I would guess for a good job you might pay at least $5K?

standard prices for paint in Melbourne are 250-300 per panel (standard size) as mr morlock said this does not include any repairs minor or major & be prepared to pay a new panel values in repairs (which a lot of panel shops try & do) so for instance an mx5 has 10 panels - 2 rear quarters, 2 doors, 2 front quarters, 2 bumpers, a bonnet & a boot. Before any repairs you’re looking at $3k, add $30-$50 for each small dent & go from there. don’t try & repair large dents or ripples, for the cost of a new panel (referring to bolt on not rear quarters) even a Taiwanese copy will come out better with less time spent on it. If you think you can do a lot of the work have a go, even if your job isn’t great unless you do more damage then good a panel shop will be able to finish off your work for you (speak to the panel shop first as many won’t look at a partly prepped car as they don’t know what you have used & any silicone ect will make the paint lift & you will be going back to them for a warranty claim)

Cars are easy to prep & if you have time & patients you can do a great job yourself, in saying that if you have never done it before leave to the experts, paint shrinks & if you have not repaired chips correctly they will show up, if you leave scuff marks from harsh sanding it will show up, any bog you use that isn’t sanded back correctly & has not been hi filled & rubbed back will look like a crater on the moon.... get my drift

ive painted alot of cars from home 2 pac and acrylic, i did a friends car he had just an old gemini wagon, it had many little dents all over it he askied me to come have a look because he had done all the prep work for me :roll: so i went around, he had what i call "spot repaired" the whole car meaning he saw a dent sanded it filled it sanded the filler sounds good hey, but when you run your hand over the whole car he had created more ripples by not feathering edges etc i had to strip out all his hard work and edge to edge repair the dents, it sounds like body work is not somthing you have done? by all means remove everything like door handles lights etc that will help but forget rubbing it back etc you realy wont save anything for doing that plus you dont want a work shop saying a problem arose because they didnt know what was under what you rubbed back, ps black is the worst hehehehe i hate it every little mark shows up so your best bet is get your paint detailed by a pro then the panels your not happy with get repaired etc or save up for a what is called a door shut respray ie the whole outside no insides, i think a budget of around 3 k you will get a good job, stay away from the insurance paint shops they will charge heaps because they will need to bill you at insurance prices or there is no point taking on your job, go to car events and ask guys with dark blue or black cars where they got there cars done it will give you some names of places that do good jobs and hopfully at a good price good luck

rota, I don't suppose you spray for cash? I sanded my car back after a friend drove it through a wire fence the first time I let anyone drive it :( a couple of years ago but never got around to getting it painted, though I think I need to go at it with the sandpaper again after getting bored and hitting it with a pressure pack a while back (dumbest idea ever)
