Cool Air Box FOR AEM Intake

Would building a cool air box like the Begi unit quieten down the added noise after fitting an AEM intake to an SE, I've heard they are quite noisy and I reckon my missus will spit it if I fit this intake. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

...or, as was publicised recently, use pain relievers more frequently to apparently reduce hearing effectiveness :P

Thanks Davex3, costs too much to upgrade the Missus. Anyhow, how much louder is the AEM intake in normal cruising conditions, and would fitting a Forge recirc valve or similar get rid of the farting or just make another annoying sound to give the Missus the gripes?

Why not build a "cool air soundproof box" around the missus, that way you could enjoy the "coughs, spits and farts" of the AEM intake without any annoying whining from the passenger seat?

Seriously though, the AEM CAI sounds great and would be easy to fabricate a box to muffle the sound - give Peter Garrett a call, he's probably got LOTS of thermal roof insulation lying around.

I have to admit I didnt like the noise when I first fitted the AEM.
Sounded like a whale farting a hoover!
But I have gotten used to it now.
At steady cruise on the highway, dont notice it anymore.
And i now enjoy the 'Power Suck' when driving spiritedly.
The Pffffttt echo from the BOV can be reduced if you soften the BOV (but thats not as much fun)

Thanks Minx, the missus drives the car most of the time as I have the 4x4 but I love the SE and am trying to get it a bit more responsive without making it sound like a sideshow. What BOV are you using, and has anyone any ideas to which aftermarket Recirc Bov is the quietest and most efficient?

The "custom made" component of the new TurboSmart Kompact is just the the 1 3/8" (35mm) barb that connects to the FM Throttle Body. The original owner of my car had the original FM GFB BOV (with 2x20mm barb fittings) and when I installed my FM Throttle Body Inlet I was able to purchase a screw-in 35mm barb from GFB to replace the 20mm barb to the TBI.

I see MazdaMania have the plumback Bovs for $175 in 20 or 25mm outlets. Which size do I need and is it better to also get a FM throttle body as well?

The FM Throttle Body Inlet connects to the BOV via a 30mm barb.

If you purchase the BOV from FM it WILL have a 30mm barb to connect to the TBI (that's the "custom" component of the new FM BOV) and a 20mm barb to plumb back into the air intake.

If you purchase the Kompact BOV locally, purchase the one with 20mm barbs BUT you will need to either get a 30mm->20mm hose reducer from the FM TBI's 30mm barb to the Kompact BOV's 20mm barb, or as stated above, you MAY be able to purchase a 30mm screw-in barb separately from Turbosmart and replace the 20mm barb.

The simplest/cheapest solution if you EVER intend to purchase the FM TBI is to purchase it in conjunction with the new FM BOV.

Thanks Lokiel, seems the go getting the pair through FM, don't know the freight costs though. I'm just looking to get the car going better seeing it has already some upgrades(exhaust, intercooler and soon AEM intake when it arrives from the US) without sounding too obnoxious when driving around the neighbourhood seeing that I'm over 50 now - have to act my age! Not worrying about MBC at the moment till I do these upgrades and see how it goes.

Made from glass fibre, mouse mat & Dynamat ..........

I use a GFB recirc. bypass valve.
The sucky noises are gone and the bypass valve is very muted. The turbo whine is almost non-existent. Well worth it in my opinion for the sucky noises in particular. It must be large enough not to restrict flow of course.
Full FM exhaust & tyres are now the main culprit of course but I don't mind that.

What a great idea Real Boris, can you give me any more info on how you made this and how its held in place. I've fitted a Turbosmart Kompact Recirc BOV and the car already feels much better, still waiting for my AEM Intake from USA.

I bought some Dynamat & stuck the sheets to each other to make a double thickness sheet.

Then I used the large end of the filter to form the sheet into a cylinder about 6mm bigger in diameter than the large end of the filter & used duck tape to temporarily stick it together. Then a single sheet of fibre mat over it all and resin to bond it together.

Next a bit more dynamat inside the cylinder at one end to make a firm fit over the large end of the filter as a push fit.

The whole outside was then sprayed with impact adhesive & the perforated sheet stuck to the outside for appearances. Trim off all the rough edges & give it a quick spray of black gloss to cover up all the fingerprints and imperfections. :lol:

Thanks Real Boris, Had an AEM Intake ordered from the US a couple of months ago and apparently US Postal lost it somehow so I received my money back. Just waiting for our dollar to rise again against the Greenback and will order again. When you talk about Dynamat what is this exactly, and how did you stick this to the heat shield?
