NC: TEIN coilover query

Postby lucifuge » Thu Feb 18, 2010 2:13 pm

Seems that running Tokico HTS is going to give me ride height misery. I'm thinking of just going coilovers at some stage and selling the Eibachs...for whatever theyre worth.

I noticed that MX5mania flog a custom TEIN coilover set for the NC (it must be custom as I can't see it on the TEIN website!). I would love to hear what these are like, has anyone any experience with them on an NC? What are good alternatives in terms of coilovers to TEINs for the NC I could consider?

Tein do make both the SuperStreet and Flex for the NC.

If you give me a couple of weeks I'll be able to answer your query as i have some Flex's sitting in Customs at the moment.

As for Tokico/eiback, give Sailor a PM and he'll tell you about that setup, although he started with an LE with the Bilstein springs.

PS Wholesale Suspension have one set of SS going cheap.

It was actually Sailor's dramas that has forced me to consider alternatives.

As for TEIN for the NC...have you a link? All the sites I've seen have them for NA and NB only.

Lucifuge,

Mine were the wrong springs in the right box.
The car has dropped ~ 20mm measured against a std NC by just changing from the stock LE Bilsteins to the Tokico HTS and that's all I can manage and still get out of my driveway.
I'm very happy with the ride quality over the Billys and the car is much more planted.
IMHO the std springs do a great job and just need to be damped a little better ... You will need some heavier bars to control the roll.

I know where you're thinking is going with the coilovers (No matter what, I can still get the ride height I want)..after my 50mm drop dramas I nearly went that route..
Coilovers would be great, but at 3-4 times the price.

Oh and when I finally wear out the Tokicos, I will go coilovers but Ohlins will be the choice (Goodwin has them on special atm US$500 off)

Scroll down till you find NC.

You should ring Fulcrum or Wholesale Suspension for a local price.

Agreed! Called Fulcrum in Melbourne - they offered me a set late last year for around $1650

NC: TEIN coilover query

Well I now have Tein Flex's fitted to my NC.

They have the Jap Spec valving to suit their smooth roads and time will tell if I whip them back out and send them off for revalving to suit our Aussie conditions.

I’ve posted in the Technical section, a description of how to install the shocks as the Tein instructions are only written in Japanese.

Initial impressions after just a few days of driving are that the Teins have completely transform the way the NC feels on the road. Its tort, firmly planted, instantly goes where it’s pointed and when pushed, has reduced wheel spin out of tight corners.

The wheels stay in contact with the ground a lot more over the rough stuff and you feel this. The rear is a lot firmer and is especially noticeable on speed humps. Slow is the best way to go here.

I still have to set the shocks to my desired height and get an alignment. It’s down 5mm more at the front (335mm) but has the same rear height (340mm) as my previous King spring setup. If time permits before the Supersprint on Sunday, I'll wind it up to 345mm front and rear. If not, the current setting will add a bit of negative camber to the front and providing the rain holds off, I’ll be able to report back on how they work towards the limit of adhesion.

All in all, a great improvement over standard.

I asked about Tein Flex at Fulcrum in Brisbane a couple of years ago. They told me that the valving was too hard for Australian conditions - just what you're experiencing CB. At the time they had Tein SS re-valved to suit Australian roads.

Yes, I've spoken to them and after Eastern Creek on Sunday I'll be pulling them out and sending them up to Brissie next week for a re-valve.

I just need to get them back quickly before the big road trip to NatMeet at the end of the month. Hopefully they will arrive back intime. If not I'll run down there on my old King/OEM shocks and OEM sways. :( I've already sold my Whiteline sways.

Had NatMeet not been a consideration I might have gone another few months before a re-valve but after under a week of poor Sydney roads I decided that I would be struggling to enjoy the trip and I'm sure my wife would have been complaining all the way back from McLaren Vale.

Just to let people know, I dropped in my Flex's for revalving today and Wholesale Suspension Blacktown have one set of Superstreets for the NC going cheap at around $1,750. Don't say you weren't told.
