iphone + mx5

I have been searching for a decent way of putting my iphone in my car that 1) didnt involve a plastic windscreen mount 2) sent the audio out via the 30 pin connector at the bottom of the phone as opposed to the audio jack 3) charged the iphone 4)looks nice in the mx5 dash. After realising nobody makes such a thing I decided to make my own...

I used an ebay iphone dock (because the apple version only comes in white), iphone cigarette lighter charger, aux cable, bit of double sided tape and black plastic trim. I hard wired the charger behind the cigarette socket so I still have a working cigarette lighter. It works brilliantly - now I can run rev light watch my g forces driving to work while I listen to music

the 30 pin connector goes to the lighter only. There is also an audio jack on the dock which goes to the headunit.

That is brilliant and very OEM in appearance, can you post a link to the hardware that you stripped in order to make it?
Perhaps a how to?

The app is called rev lite - it shows realtime g force and combines gps and google maps to do lap timing. The full version looks awesome but you need OBD-II to get all the engine diagnostics.

mx5chic - no stripping was required - just plug the usb charger into the cigarette lighter socket ( I wired it in behind the existing one to hide the plug and also so I could keep the existing socket on the dash). Then plug the other end of the charger cable into the dock as well as the 3.5mm jack from the aux input on the back of the stereo (most aftermarket units have them). I pulled out the little cubby infront of the gear stick and mounted the dock in there, covered the surrounding area with some black plastic trim and that was it!

This doesn't look secure enough to work on a bike but you could adapt it to mount the iphone horizontally under your stereo so you could still acess the aircon cotrols.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Great, what brand is the charger base? - Belkin ? I have been using a unit with built in charger etc but it is mounted on a stalk which plugs into the cigarette lighter - great system but when the G-Force from cornering kicks in it just topples over :(
Time to get the soldering iron out and get creative

NA Iphone Kit (no modifcation to trim) however it is slightly bulky...

There is also versions for the side of the NB Console without damaging trim as well..

OBDII socket maybe can provide the power removing the need for muckn with the lighter wires. Plus we get real time computer + engine fault codes. Quick someone tell me the killer app software and I will invest in an I-phone.

I knew there was a good reason for buying a 2002.
