Had it tuned today to ensure its a safe tune on stock injectors. 6psi with a Walbro pump

Adam, that is a great gain in power over your std 69rwkw!!

Just a word of caution with the RX7 injectors (which I'm sure your probably aware of) is that they will probably wash your bores and lead to premature engine failure due to the different spray pattern of a piston injector. I have found a great supplier of injectors in the US for piston spray patterns and you can choose what cc's you want. For example 440's were USD$50ea (BNIB) and 550's were USD$60ea and shipping was a flat rate of USD$40. http://www.eficomponents.com

Let me know if you would like to know more about emissions testing etc...

Sounds like we may need to go on a SA run somewhere soon...

How many hours of tuning did it take to get yours to pass and what did you have to do with brakes etc? This is my next project...

No worries. I'd just hate to see someone destroy their engine prematurely when I know that there is a fix!

Basically I had to upgrade my brakes to the larger 1.8 ones and essentially that was it. Submit an application to modify outlining all of your planned modifications. Regency will then come back with a list of requirements, mainly larger brakes for me as I have a 1.6 (had to simply upgrade to 1.8 brakes) and a couple of other minor things.

Now for tuning... I took my car to a tuner who Regency suggested as he has the same test as the IM240 (emissions test that Regency do). He then tunes the 5 gases to comply with the emissions requirements. All up this took quite a few hours, due to a few factors being unfamiliar with my ECU (MSPNP), the MSPNP still had a boost protection setting which we hadn't taken off which we mistinterpreted as a hardware issue and I had mis-plumbed up some stuff on my external wastegate!! As for cost, you should aim for around $800 to $1,200 I reckon.

Now there are some tuners out there who claim that they can lean off the tune so that it will pass the IM240 test. I have not personally gone down this route and do not know if this is right/factual.

Once tuned it costs $495 from memory for an emissions test. If you fail it's another $495 for a re-test - hence my decision to go with the Regency suggested tuner for emissions.

Personally it is worthwhile spending the extra $ to have it complied as no defects/no insurance issues. If you want to sell your car later it is all legal.

If you want further details on the tuners or to even have a look at the paperwork involved just let me know.

So you didn't have to engage an engineer to do a brake and handling test


Did you submit the application to modify form before you actually fitted the kit? I don't want to submit it and then have it logged against my rego so they then pull me over because of it

No I didn't need to engage an engineer to do a brake and handling test. I believe the logic behind it is that the NA8 is the same shell/chassis as the 1.6 and thus if we are using the brakes from the 1.8 theoritically there should be no issue with handling/braking/etc on a 1.6...

From memory I did submit the form before fitting up the kit. I doubt that anyone will pull you over just because you have submitted a form to modify. I don't think anything is lodged against a vehicle to say whether it has been modified or not. If you do get pulled over usually they will ask for your documentation, which then states what modifications have been approved and they'll probably just do a visual to confirm that nothing extra has made its way on.

FYI, I've been driving mine daily now for 12 or so months in NSW and SA and have not been pulled over...

It's also important to have your car street legal or you may void insurance.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Needed to take my Watanabes and stockies to the tyre shop to get the tyres swapped from the watanabes to the stockies and I cant take the car there during the week. Solution - Put the SSR's on. I've never had all four on the car at the same time as I never finished rolling the rear guards before I broke my guard roller, and the rear wheels stick out a mile so I think it'd last about five minutes on the road before yellow sticker time. Damn they look good though

Hey bark, I have a fresh motor and running in with rx7 550's. Do you know for a fact if anyone has had their bores glazed by using the rx7 injectors in a BP motor? U got me worried. Im just on 800k's
