Did the tuner you use change the idle setings i left in the computer?
If not then set timing at 0 at 900 rpm 5 at 1000rpm

Timing check question

Postby Adam_NAclubman » Sat Dec 19, 2009 9:33 pm

I think he said the timing was pretty much perfect and he just added some fuel above 4000 on boost

Russell, what should I be setting the base timing to? The Sheet with the ecu said to set it to 10. I'm not touching anything in the ecu

That sheet i send with the ECU was for seting the base timing with the STD ECU

With the Autronic you will need to set it a 700rpm = 20 deg adv
800rpm = 3 deg adv
900rpm = 0 adv
1000rpm = 5 adv

ther is no timing lock fuction to the SMC

Ok, so I need to set it so that the notch is on the correct mark, depending on exactly what rpm its idling at?

The sheet said to set it to 10 degrees on the standard ecu before fitting the Autronic, so I assume it was tuned with it still at 10 degrees, that shouldn't have changed should it?

Or are the settings you are talking about changed within the Autronic software?

Yep with the autronic has a differant idle timing to the stock ecu
the reason is to help with stable idle

Glad to hear I wasn't giving bum advice! :D

BTW, the stock timing is 10 degrees. If you want a bit more top end, 14 degrees will keep you happy. Or 18 degrees will provide more mid range torque but might require 98 RON.

When setting the timing you should also set the idle speed to 850rpm using a multimeter to measure the idle. The dash tacho isn't sufficiently precise.

There is a very useful guide ( with pictures ) to changing the timing on an MX5 here

I've just bumped mine down from 18 deg to 14 deg. (Mines an NA8)
I found that on very hot Melbourne days (38+ degrees) I was starting to get some pinging, even whilst running 98 RON fuel. (which I use exclusively)
I've also found that I think I like the feeling of the engine better at 14 now, its shifted the torque band slightly higher???

Cheers
Chris
