why was there even double lines on that section of road? That was a perfectly acceptable overtaking area in my eyes... the 4 cars at the one time maybe not but oh well.

Most of the lower section has been given double lines, including sections that were once marked with broken lines for overtaking. I guess the powers that be have decided any overtaking through there is unsafe.
Which brings me to another point, is overtaking over broken lines not taught in driver training anymore? I see strings of 10 or more cars all following each other like sheep, because the car up the front is doing well under the speed limit, when plentiful safe overtaking opportunities, over broken white lines with good visibility, go unused... People seem quite shocked to see me driving past on the 'wrong' side of the road, even though it's perfectly safe and legal (and not even speeding, as the car in front is generally going very slowly)

I thought that may have been the case... they have done similar things up here.

But but but you're a dick head if you do that mate.
Reality is the front two cars were in tourist mode driving at about 40km/h and I had plenty of room to pass 6 cars if needed. See how much straight road there was after I joined my side of the road... There was nothing stupid about what I did and I'd do it again.
I thought there were provisions for overtaking on double white lines where it's deemed safe?

Not as far as I know. Solid line = stay on your side of the road.

If the road has broken lines then it is deemed safe to overtake at that point and if you do it safely, your not a dick head, plenty of people still overtake in "legal" overtaking zones dangerously. The reason they have now double lines on that section was the number of accidents that have occurred there. I have also been the first to arrive after a head on, on the Bundeena road in a straight section ,it happens and the trauma this causes everybody for the sake of a bit of patience just isn't worth it.
What Broady said, If you cross double lines you are breaking the law, even if you are on your side of the road and wander over double lines and are seen by the police you can be fined.

I take it you're being sarcastic. I'm talking about overtaking where it's safe and legal, not one or the other.
I remember once, many moons ago, where on a particular non club drive, people with CB radios were advising if the road ahead was clear so that others could overtake over double white lines, and around blind corners. Perfectly safe for them, but the people they were overtaking weren't aware of the radio communications and were very shocked. Dodgy all round... Ended up with a car upside down and a very very upset truck driver.

Did Natio last night after Ribs n Rumps, nice drive through there @ 10:30pm, stopped at Stanwell Tops, then headed back, got home 1pm....so tired! Saw some wildlife and almost got collected by a branch.

How many of you were there?
I was out there last night as well but a bit earlier with acidkid. Caught the fading sunlight and the extremely loud cicadas through the final section. They were deafening close to sunset. Also managed to murder about a hundred bugs with my windscreen on the way back.
