The Maxxis were OK in the corners just not in a straight line.

I wouldn't let a Maxxis tyre within a bulls roar of any car I owned.

The maxxis tyres on my mountain bike are great!

Instead of 204/40/17s, my local tyre specialist is recommending 215/45/17 Mayruns (Euro made under Continental licence) which he runs on his own lowered/modified Falcadores etc. Quite like the idea of the extra width to protect the rims, the extra sidewall height for a bit more compliance (I'll wind up the stiffness on the Teins a tad to compensate - might lower them a bit too), the bigger rolling circumference to up the gearing a bit, and the $115 complete per corner. Realise there'll be more unsprung weight but I'm not a racer. Don't care about the lack of a brand name (in the same way that I prefer driving a Mazda to a Porsche).

Any thoughts?

I've recently purchased a 2001 NB, mainly for the weekend but some track days eventually. Need to get a new set of 205/45R16 tyres for it.
I have just been recommended the Yokohama S-drives as a better weekend / track day tyre, than say a Michelin PP2 which i was recommended as a better
daily drive tyre. The dealer also said the Bridgestone Re001 was a good all round tyre but not as good all rounder as the PP2. He said the S-drive's will be noisier than the PP2s or RE001's. I've got a set of Yokohama ADVAN sports on my HSV Clubsport and reckon they're much better tyres than the Bridgestone Potenza's i previously had, so with this in mind i'm seriously considering the S-drives.
Also i'm considering the Achilles 123S, just not sure if they will be too noisey, but then again, once I get my new exhaust system it may not be an issue, and the price is right.

Any body else had any experience with the Yokohama S-Drives or Achilles 123S ??

I wouldn't touch them, but then again, I am picky when it comes to tyres...

Just doing this excersize myself at the moment - in 204/40/17 I have obtained the following prices:

PP2 - $319.00
RE001 - $259.00
P Zero Neros - $269.00
S Drives - $279.00

As a wild card I threw in Federal 595SS's as I have heard good things about them.

In that size they are load rated at 80 - apparently the MX5 has a load rating of 83. But these were discounted heavily and came in at $130.00.

At this stage I am keen on the P Zero Nero's having had them before and very much liking them.

Putting the other two 001's on the front of the camel tomorrow. a Taking AJ's advice have decided to drive it from Geelong to Forster -Tuncurry at Christmas ...... Just to "scrub in" the tyres a bit up the old Pacific Highway.
It still has a little bit of "twitch" in the tracking which I put down to the mis-match of tyres.
I now have a couple of Goodyear F 1 tyres which are about half worn I think, which I will have to find a new home for.

The Maxxis MAV1 is a dreadful tyre!
Harsh, noisy and lacking in grip.

The MAZ1 is a totally different kettle of fish.

The current Motor magazine that came out on Wednesday has its annual tyre test in it so that might be of interest to you.

I, missed buying a copy of Motor magazine with the tyre review and can't find a shop that as any in stock.

Could someone display their results for road and race tyres, would be much appreciated.
