Auto elecs check in! Weird headlight problem..

Postby dorifta » Mon Dec 14, 2009 10:50 am

hey hey

The mx5 has H3 headlights (high and low in the same globe), one day the drives side low beam (normal light) stopped working. So i took out the globe to sus it out, looks fine - not burnt or anything so I put the passenger side globe in the drivers side to make sure it isnt wiring or anything...

Now the passenger side (good globe) stops working too! On both, the highbeams work, but not the normal low beam lights.... another thing to note is that when i turn on the high beams the blue high beam indicator light on the dash no longer comes on.

So far i have:
Checked fuses - everything seems in order
Replaced fuses with others with same Ampage - no change
Checked relays - i dont know much about these but they look normal
fitted HID's - same problem, only the high beams work.

What else can I check before dropping the car off to an auto elec? Im going to get a multimeter n test if theres any current coming out of the H3 plug-to-globe... maybe i am extremely unlucky n blew 3 globes...

any ideas?

cheers

I had a similar problem a while back with the low beam on one side & then the other not working. The globe filaments were in tact, but the coating on the low beam filament had degraded. I replaced the globes & it was all good.

Problem is you say you fitted HIDs which responded the same, which perhaps suggests car not globes, but were the HIDs new? And have you tried fitting new or know to be working H3 globes? Btw, I also didn't have a problem with the high beam dash light coming on, so your problem could be completely different.

I always thought the mx5s used h4 globes and not h3?

H4 in an NA, but dorifta has an NB8A - not having owned an NB8A, I'm using the description he provided.

Sry gents was thinking of my other car, they are h4s and it turns out both my old globes gave up at th same time and reason the HID kit didn't work was because of the polarity stickers (+ and -) were on the wrong way!

The hids are bloody bright and much much better then normal off the shelf items!
