POWDER COATING MS03 Wheels

How much time do you have on your hands Dweezle? If you 've plenty, have a garage and access to water you can do it yourself. I did at little cost but I had the advantage of having the tyres off the wheels. I jacked up the back of the car, put a wheel on and started up in 1st gear. Then with the hose running I just held wet n dry on the rim until all the clear coat was gone and got down to a finish which cleaned up beautifully with autosol. Same for inside of the rim. The wheel itself I just roughened up, masked it off and then painted (in my case wheel paint). Its been over twelve months now and they still wash up perfrect.

If you haven't come across it before, Green Comet has a damn awesome thread here on his DIY refurbishing of his wheels, great tips to be had. :)

POWDER COATING MS03 Wheels

Postby Dweezle » Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:23 am

Well i have been busy this morning.

Started Stripping the MS03's, and sanding back some of the blemishes.

Image
Ps- Don't do this in the kitchen........ Nearly passed out

Lightly sanded the 2 wheels with 80 grit just to scratch them up a bit, and then painted on Paint stripper, left for about 20 minutes, Let it bubble up, washed off with a wire brush, and then repeated about 3 times.

One is basically fully stripped, the other has another coat to go.

Then i'll have the other 2 to do. it is taking a little while, but i am enjoying it so far. :D

Jaysus! You do this sort of stuff outside or in the garage (with the door open).

It is just a really soft brush, just to wipe away the paint. Seems to be working really well..

I just hold it under a hose and scrub it all off.

I have then sanded any remaining paint off, and even managed to get the MAZDASPEED logo clean with minimal effort.

Wish i didn't have to go into the damn studio today  , would like to get into the 2 remaining Wheels.

But they will have to wait.

Good to see you're having a go! Might as well strip the clear off the ring as well. Once you get that nice and shiny you only have to use autosol to bring it up once a year ie dont repaint it with clear.
