Battery too tall - any solutions

Hi, The Supercharge Battery from AutoBarn MF40B20DF is too tall for my MX5 NB - what do most people do? Cut a bigger hole in the masonite floor thing - so it will fit flat?

Without trying to sound like a smart ar$e, I'd have thought most people would buy the correct sized battery? Take it back and get another?

Yeah, swap it. The cover keeps metal items (or any others for that matter) in the boot from shorting across the battery and also from damaging it, so I would not be cutting that or throwing it away. Are you sure there is nothing in the bottom of the battery well that it's sitting on though?

the base should sit flat - i've got the same battery and the base fits in the plastic battery tray in my NA.

i extended the height of the tie down with a $2 d shackle from bunnings

This subject has been raised before and alternative batteries are suggested- I saved some info which included "mx52nv 9/11/08 NA and NB MX5s should all use batteries that are sealed and vented (which should hook up to the factory venting tubes). This means they are maintenance free and usually come with a one or two year warranty. Having a lead acid battery in the boot is not a good idea".
I suggest you do a search and do some reading - your retailer I suggest is obliged to sell you the right battery.

I could be wrong but based on the above dimensions the MF43 is the correct battery for the NB not the MF40B20DF

yep but its a problem with the NBs because the floor sits ontop of the battery

which means if the battery is taller which in this case it does it holds the floor up



I've got the same battery I just left it like that

i used the factory clamp but just didn't bolt it all the way down

theres a plastic bit that hangs down on the floor i took that off and just sat the floor on it

seems to be fine for the last year and heading towards 2 years early next year i think or close to it

My Supercharge battery has lasted me 1.5 years now. Recently I did not start the car for almost 3 weeks, and it cranked normally on start-up.

As others have pointed out, fit the correct battery, the battery is a specific lightweight type for applications such as the MX-5 and use of an "off-spec" battery is NOT recommended.

The MF43 battery fits perfectly in the stock location if you trim the edge of the plastic battery tray on an NB. Mine is now 4 years old and will see me through to next winter. Best $99 spent on the car. It is a new tech calcium low gas design that does not require vent tubes. The battery described by th OP is a different model to the MF43.

What is the OP?

Marshall's batteries said they had an Exide one that would fit - but I will see if Autobarn has the MF43 - The RACQ had a battery listed but they do not carry it & would need to order it in & did not know how much it cost as well nor what sort of warranty - dimensions smaller though - 190 x 130 x 170. They said is was a 2340 - product number??
