What head? The coolant hose inlet head? or the drain plug head?

I've had mine in the car for about 5 months now.

However I found a few problems over the weekend whilst replacing a few things. It appears that my radiator is suffering from electroylsis (the iside of the radiator has turned black). I was originally going to fit an earth strap but never did as I was lazy...anyway there are a lot of theories on electrolysis.
You can see here that the AC is just touching the bottom radiator tank. The AC radiator is rubber mounted but the lines touch the body in palces obivously.


I should be able to easily move this forward to alleviate that problem. I will get a multi-meter and try and determine which system has a bad earth. In the mean time I have disconnected the battery till I determine what the problem is and how to fix it. I only drive this car maybe 1-2 days per week and it starts fine after weeks of no use.
I was wondeirng if anyone has ever used a zinc anode in their radiator? They are quite common in marine racing and similar (albiet smaller) to what is insde a domestic hot water service. This is not a total solution for this problem, I need to find the source of the wayward current but I think this is a bit of security at least.

I have also been told by a few people that I should be using red coolant in this radiator? Am currently using Tectaloy 90 green pre-mixed coolant.

There's no problems with running sacrificial anodes in your radiator AFTER you correct your electrical leakage and earth your radiator.
I've spent the last 30+ years fitting and replacing these bloody things
Caterpillar and Cummings engines all use them.
As for the colour of your coolant, the colour is determined by the manufacture, as long as you use a good product colour is immaterial.
BTW, if you fit an anode make sure it doesn't touch the inner core of the radiator otherwise it won't work!!!
A word for the uninitiated, always follow the coolant manufactures recommendations when mixing up your coolant, overdosing is NOT better, under dosing if anything is better.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the advice, most appreciated.
I'll make sure the anode isn't too long as you said but I will fix the earth problem first. I don't think the problem was there before the old radiator came out so it's probably an install earthing issue.
Can you recommend who might sell these anodes?

Go to a marine dealership or similiar and ask for a pencil anode, I think the best option for fitting, if there is room, would be where the drain tap is.
Unscrew the tap and fit the anode.

I bought a radiator from ASI in Melborne, $265 delivered to Home 4 working days after ordering it!
Now I'm worried, everything fitted straight up, no bloody washers,the lower mount pins fit and the drain plug is protected by a shoulder,even the fans line up perfectly. It seems to be manufactured reasonably well, no awards for welding neatness but for the money it'll do.
Only think I've picked up on (and remember I think too much) is that the bottom hose kinks slightly coming up to the steel pipe. I'll modify the hose and steel hose mount as my oil catch can and sway bar mounts are in the way so it needs to be modded anyway.

Seems like the ASI radiators fit better than the cooling pro, even Wazman said that he had no problems with fitment.
And it's cheaper than Cooling pro as well!

What do you mean by the drain plug is protected by a shoulder?
It seems the cooling pro have improved so shouldn't have any fitment issues any more
So which is better ASI or Cooling Pro?

I got the PWR one for a while its cool but I dont think the stock rad cap fits the aftermarket rad...
what rad cap are people using for their PWR rad??? part number etc plz??

I used the stock one on my PWR equipped NA. You have to twist the cap further than expected. Same applies for the Cooling Pro.

both the same? I just haven't heard fitment problems with ASI, however there are less people who have used ASI for the mx5.
ASI is cheaper anyway.
