Removing Body Kit

Postby Sandor » Wed Oct 28, 2009 6:48 pm

The wife's NB8A that we bought about a year ago has the factory(?) body kit on it.

I am not really keen on it, but before I consider removing it, I am curious to know how easy they are to remove and am I likely to end up with holes or marks that will involve filling and/or painting (i.e. even more effort!).

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you mean the front lip and side skirts?

Yes, the front lip, side skirts and the boot lid spoiler.

The front lip should be ok as the holes are under the bumper - ie won't be visible. The side skirts on the other hand will have drill holes a bit higher up (between the pinch rails and splash guard I think). I can't remember exactly, its been a few years since I installed mine. The boot I have no idea, never installed one.

I am sure there will be a few forumites willing to take the body kit off your hands which should offset any body work costs!

I'd be keen on grabbing them off you if you want to get rid of them cheap cheap.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

The bootlid spoiler is bolted on. I have the same one on my car and am dying to find someone with a red bootlid, no spoiler, who wants to swap lids! If you happen to be able to do the same, swap the spring which holds it open too, as they are heavier duty to suit the added weight of the spoiler. If you don't swap, the lid will completely open when you pull the boot release, and the new owner of your old spoiler will need a broom handle to keep the lid up!
Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever.

Thanks for that.

As Zorak said, the front lip is straight forward, just a series of remove bolts and she drops off.

Had a go at one of the side skirts and after removing the bolts it stayed in place - appeared to also be affixed on to the body work (don't know with what). Am a wee bit reluctant to start trying to prise bits off at this point.

That then got me thinking about having to remove residual adhesive, and....it then occurred that the body kit could potentially have been in place for 10 years (don't know if it was a factory extra), and if the side skirts and boot spoiler are removed, the result may be an obvious difference in paint colour and finish?

May have to reconsider.....
