We talking mx5s only or in general?

i been using spacers for over 2 years now... not a single problem... all of the boys had no issues either.


MX5's, the thread on the tie rod is too short with a spacer, basically if you hit something, it will pop out of place, and you will be in a whole lot of trouble.

Haunted hill's was made for mx5's ........ Dont go to any other track until you go there! its tight, blind, has one 50m straight and takes huge balls to go full throttle through the first corner! loved it.

S13's have stuff thread going back into the rack when you use spacers....... I've have yet to hear of any stearing arm's coming out.

I bought a set of "GK Tech" nissan s13 rack spacers and they fit the mx5 rack perfect....... so quick to install i didn't get time to take a pic sorry.......i figured for $12 it dont really matter if they dont fit.......

After a couple of embarrassing spins at haunted hills whilst trying to link the tight off camber bottom section..... Its Knucle time 8)

Step one..... take an angle grinder to your knuckle :shock:

Step two....check clearances, shorten knuckle arm, then get someone that can weld cast iron to weld your sh*t back together :roll:

There's a little more to it than that.....
If you want to do some tight turns to get that tight parking spot.....
If you do motor khana, then this mod might be beneficial to you.

Cash flow is the main reason for the holdup on the turbo kit...... and the massive amount of time that my house mate needs to sit still long enough to do it.

Seriously Wazman, I hope you have professional indemnity and product liability insurance cover....but then again, even that wouldn't protect you in this instance! Life's too short for this sh*t. You and your boilermaker/welder mate are leaving yourselves wide open here!!! Are you sure the uprights are cast iron???? :roll: They're forged steel!!! Hope you didn't use welding rods for cast iron!!!

lol yeah, I just sorta slapped that post up....... i'm a wood machinest so I got no idea what there made from hence i state "there's more to it than that". You can see its TIG work.

and i guess like the little sticker says on my wheels........ for track use only :lol: as if.....

My house mate has been doing knuckles for over a year now and has not had one break yet (touch wood!)

That's the thing, they won't break straight away and may last well more than a year. They may last several owners... You never really know who you are going to kill with this sort of back yard butchery.

Having a welding ticket does not qualify you for this stuff. Hell, I've got TAFE certs in welding and a degree and am registered as a professional engineer and I wouldn't even consider this. I know one bloke who has cut & welded uprights and he did the full material tests, got the right rods, gor the right gas, got the right pre-heat and still I'm not comfortable with it. Your mate is just belting it together like it's mild steel.

Again, you could kill someone with this, and it may be the person you crash into, not just yourself.

So all this :lol: just shows you don't know what you don't know.

You're not wrong there! This sort of modification falls under section LS of the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicles, specifically Code LS3 -Design. http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP11_Section_LS_Suspension_and_steering_3Feb2006.pdf

Here's a key section from it....

Modified Components

Where modification of steering components cannot be avoided, the operations employed should be determined and controlled such that the final properties can be predicted and verified on an individual components basis by a NATA approved materials laboratory, using relevant Australian or International Standards as a reference. The following post process testing by the laboratory is a minimum for such components:

* Welded parts should have the weld material identified, a hardness test traversing across the weld area including the heat affected zone, an X-Ray inspection and a statement of weld integrity;

* Heated parts should be stress relieved, heat treated to a defined specification and undergo non-destructive testing such as magnetic particle or ultrasonic................


There are also prescriptive performance requirements (load cases) whereby the modified components must demonstrate satisfactory stress levels.

The fact that none have failed to date (that you are aware of), won't have any value in a court of law if documented proof cannot be provided that this modification was performed in accordance with the NCOP.

Well you guys make sure you dont ride in any elevators !! because you never know who built them.....your best bet is to take the stairs, much safer. Maybe just stay in bed in the morning in case something bad happens to you if you leave the house. :lol:

I got the adaptronic tuned. NA just so there are less things to worry about after i bolt the turbo on, it will just need re tune. It made 70 kw stock and 77kw after the adaptronic got tuned.
