Todays effort
Also tapped the sump for oil return, now we just have to swap the known good alternator, coils and cas to the new engine, and fit the intake air temp sensor in the inlet manifold, then hopefully we'll get the other engine in next weekend

Yesterday I swapped a few things from the old engine to the new one. Alternator, coils, injectors. Was going to swap the CAS but I think I'd better leave that for someone that can actually make sure they put it in with the engine rotated to the correct angle. Also got the box seperated from the engine and degreased the bejesus out of it, oil leak at the back of the head had dumped heaps of oil on the box and that resulted in a very thick layer of grime, all gone now.
Looking at the list of what I got done... It's really not much at all but somehow it took about 4.5 hours. At least I've gotten it to the point where now it just needs the flywheel and clutch fitted, then box bolted up and it can be dropped in, then I can put the new radiator etc in and start thinking about intercooler piping

I dont know if its just the angle of the car in the photo but it works well the way it is.
I wanted to get the clutch slave bolted up today and finish the stuff that needs doing under the car but we started with the 'straight fit' Cooling Pro alloy radiator instead. Fans went on ok but the holes for the bottom mounts to hold the rad in place needed to be drilled out a tad as they weren't big enough, then we discovered that because the core is thicker the ...bolts? (not really, no thread, held in place with a circlip instead) weren't long enough anyway, so we had to piece together some longer bolts, mount them the opposite way around so they'd go in, but the annoying thing was that the mounts didn't line up with the bracket on the car so we had to bend that, jack the radiator up a tad etc to get the bolts through. Then the kevlar reinforced hoses had to be trimmed to fit. All went together in the end though.
I wanted to do the clutch next but my cousin wanted to see how much we'd need to modify the NB intercooler kit to fit. I figured it wouldn't take long to see that it was completely wrong and then we could do the clutch so I agreed we'd do the cooler piping. Bugger me if it didn't all fit exactly right on my NA8. Even the mounting points for the intercooler were in the right spot. The only thing we had to do was to nibble a little bit out of the bonnet release support.
Now I have a few problems. One of the heater hoses, the one that comes from the front of the front of the car, the metal bit that normally bolts to the manifold studs, that didn't get bolted up when the engine was out and now its jammed in the wrong spot against the dump pipe. Michael wants to just bend it but I'm not too happy with that idea. This isn't going to necessitate removing the exhaust manifold is it? It is the pipe going just below the exhaust ports in this photo

Also we're not sure where what we think is a water pipe coming off the back of the exhaust manifold is meant to go? Should have taken a photo of it...
Need to know which fuel line goes to what, does the front one go to the front one and rear to rear? They're all within a couple of inches of one another so its not out of the question that they could cross over, and I don't know if its a problem to connect the feed to the return and run fuel the wrong way through the fuel rail
How do people have their AFM and filter set up before the turbo? We're not entirely happy with how the kit will have them sitting

Just need to sort out why my radiator is leaking from the tap on the bottom and my car is ready to start
Well, idle anyway, haven't changed the ecu over, but i should be able to start it and idle it to make sure nothing is leaking and check the timing.
I need to raise the coilovers heaps aswell, I can't get my arm under the car past my elbow to reach fallen nuts. I can't believe I drove it this low for a year

I'll try and get a photo of my birds nest of piping between the radiator top hose and the throttle body. It's a bit silly but should work I think

I used a brass T piece to split off the idle bypass from the bov, and I changed the right angle piece that goes off from the intake pipe on the AVO kit to a male-male threaded connector that the T piece screws into. I then used a BA Falcon radiator hose (I think) to go from the bov to the fitting in front of the turbo, glued some smaller diameter hose in it as a reducer like the AVO kit uses at the bov end. If it doesn't work I can still try using the hose the NB kit came with, but it is too long and the wrong shape so goes right out to near the LH light before going to the fitting
