Installing a new gear knob?

Just bought my first car and therefore my first mx5, so be nice, newbie here. It's a 2000 series 2 (NB8B?) and the gear knob is fairly worn and want to know whats involved in installing a new one. Was looking at mx5mania gear knobs such as the tt shifter and wanted to know if its easy to install myself considering im in melbourne. Does anyone in vic know of a good place to go? mx5factory? do they have those sorts of accesories?. If anyone has some tips or suggestions on what i should do it would be greatly appreciated.

The knob will feel like it is glued on, when you first take it off, but keep unscrewing it anticlockwise, and eventually you'll hear a "snap", ad then it will just unscrew easily.

If you do'nt have the strongest grip, you can use a pair of vice pliers, but please make sure you put a soft cloth under the jaws so you don't damage the current knob.
You may need it again.

If you struggle with the grip but don't have the tools, I've found wrapping it in those thick red rubber bands or even better, those non stick mats helps.

Anti-clockwise will unscrew it

Initially I couldn't undo the knob despite my best efforts.
I found going for a drive warmed the gearbox (which transfers heat into the stick) and made it easier to unscrew.

What Benny said...lots of padding and some multi-grips.

We opted for a Skunk2 gearknob - made a big difference.
