A couple of questions

Postby Adam_NAclubman » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:47 pm

Now I've got my engine and most stuff done, I have a few problems. One of the heater hoses, the one that comes from the front of the front of the car, the metal bit that normally bolts to the manifold studs, that didn't get bolted up when the engine was out and now its jammed in the wrong spot against the dump pipe. Michael wants to just bend it but I'm not too happy with that idea. This isn't going to necessitate removing the exhaust manifold is it? It is the pipe going just below the exhaust ports in this photo

Above the oxygen sensor in this one

Also we're not sure where what we think is a water pipe coming off the back of the exhaust manifold is meant to go? Should have taken a photo of it... :(

Need to know which fuel line goes to what, does the front one go to the front one and rear to rear? They're all within a couple of inches of one another so its not out of the question that they could cross over, and I don't know if its a problem to connect the feed to the return and run fuel the wrong way through the fuel rail

How do people have their AFM and filter set up before the turbo? We're not entirely happy with how the kit will have them sitting

Cheers

No, just remove the nut off the exhaust stud that the pipe bracket should be attached to and slip the bracket on, put the nut back on and tighten.

Not sure about that one.

I’m sure I have seen this topic on the big forum, or the turbo Miata net forum, a search might find something.

I was able to remove the AFM as I am using a MAP sensor with my replacement ECU. In my case the filter is connected to the turbo via a 90 degree 75mm silicon pipe so the filter sits behind the passenger headlight. Still getting hot air from the engine bay, but most of this heat is removed by the intercooler.

Is said pipe in this photo?

Is that your brake line sitting on the dump?

Ah, yes it is in that photo!

First, the pipe sitting against the dump is the one that is now jammed in place because numbnuts didn't put it on properly, its kind of jammed between the dump, manifold and the horizontal bit of the engine bay that sticks out above the firewall. I think I may have to remove the manifold to be able to move it into place.

The one I'm not sure about can be seen between the dump and the heater hose outlet, its protruding out over the braided metal line in the photo. Its part of the manifold, so I'm assuming that they intend on running coolant through it? I just dont know where it is meant to hook up to.

Cheers for the replies so far

That pipe connects to the heater outlet. Has to be fixed unless you re-route that pipe elsewhere. The hard pipe sits in the alloy fitting with an o-ring - I generally pull that piece off and have a threaded fitting welded to it so I can route the hose away from the turbo. Also, that O2 sensor looks far too close to the body work and will surely hit - is that standard or is that something your mechanic has done? My car has it under the car where there is much more room and the temps are lower - that cast manifold will get serious heat in it - I've seen them glow!

Thats the standard position for oxygen sensor with the AVO dump, I guess I could always screw a blank into that and get the front pipe tapped to move the sensor down there. It doesn't hit the body, and the engine would have to move a lot for it to do it.

I think the manifold definitely has to come off to put the heater pipe back on. Frig.

Any ideas on the other one that is on the manifold?

That looks like the EGR pipe
Just block it off as the NA8's don't have one

Ah, is that possibly one of the differences between the NA8 and NB8A kits?

Fixed the heater hose pipe, had to wrestle the thing out of the water pump housing with a tiny amount of space to wiggle it, and cut the top of the bracket so it slips around the exhaust manifold stud, and I had to loosen off the manifold so I could get the lower second from the back nut off because it hits the manifold at full extension. The middle stud is a complete bastard to get to! Ended up there was juuuust enough wiggle room to get it off, ended up grinding a bit off the nut to get it back on.

I also got the clutch slave back on, far more annoying than I initially thought it would be. Gearbox has new Motul oil in it (it was green!) and I connected the loom to the starter motor and alternator, except for one small plug on the alternator loom, not entirely sure where that goes...

Now I just need to cap the exhaust recirculation pipe, fit the fuel lines and a couple of heater hoses, plug the loom back in, work out how to run the blow-off valve because the NB setup doesn't seem to fit, fill it up with coolant and oil and plug the ecu in. At least I think thats all thats left...
